Cyclones Split a Pair in Connecticut

The Cyclones and Connecticut Tigers split a pair on Wednesday evening, with Brooklyn winning game one by the score of 7-1, before falling in walk off fashion in the nightcap, 2-1. The loss was Brooklyn's 39th of the season, ensuring their first losing season in franchise history.

GAME ONE

NORWICH, CT (September 2, 2015) - The Connecticut Tigers jumped out to an early lead in game one on Wednesday evening, when Shane Zeile had a two-out double in the bottom of the second and then came around to score on Tanner Donnel's RBI single to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.

But that is all the offense that Cyclones starter Eddie Villasmil (1-2) would allow. The righthander tossed 6.0 innings, allowing just the single run on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

For the Cyclones offense, things got started slowly, as the first 10 batters were retired in order. But the Brooklyn bats woke up in a big way in the top of the fourth. Vinny Siena and David Thompson had back-to-back singles with one out to get things started. Later in the frame, Zach Mathieu worked a walk after falling behind in the count 0-2, to load the bases. CF Desmond Linday took advantage of the bases loaded opportunity with a line drive single to left field that plated a pair and put Brooklyn in front 2-1.

But the Cyclones weren't done. In the top of the fifth Jose Garcia reached on an error to start the frame and Hengelbert Rojas followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Oswald Caraballo then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved the pair into scoring position before Alfredo Reyes had an RBI single and Vinny Siena added a sacrifice fly that made it 4-1 in favor of Brooklyn.

The Cyclones offensive surge continued in their next turn at-bat and again they were aided by a Tigers miscue. David Thompson reached on an error to start the threat and Jeff Diehl followed with a single to put a pair of runners aboard. Zach Mathieu then hit into what seemed like a routine 6-4-3 double play, but Diehl broke up the double play with a hard slide into second base that put runners on the corners with one out. After Desmond Lindsay k'd for out number two, Jose Garcia hit w line drive double to left field to score a pair and make it 6-1. After a fielding error by Connecticut pitcher Matt Davenport allowed Garcia to move up to third, a wild pitch enabled the Cyclones catcher to score and make it 7-1 in favor of Brooklyn.

That's how the game would end as Villasmil handed the ball over to P.J. Conlon who pitched a scoreless ninth, including a pair of strikeouts to close out the Cyclones win.

GAME TWO

In Game Two, Brooklyn jumped out to an early lead when Jeff Diehl led off the top of the second inning with a solo blast, his fifth home run of the season, to give the Cyclones an early 1-0 advantage.

The lead would be short lived however, as Connecticut drew even in the bottom of the frame. Brooklyn starter Jose Celas struck out Shane Zeile to start the frame, but Brandon Brosher overthrew first base when trying to throw down to complete the putout, allowing Zeile to advance to second. Later in the frame, Jacob Kapstein had a two-out double on a line drive to left field that plated Zeile and knotted the score at 1-1.

Celas left the game after 3.0 innings, constantly maneuvering his way out of trouble. The righthander allowed just the one unearned run on one hit, but walked three batters and has now walked 28 batters in 17.0 innings.

That would be all of the offense for a while, as Tigers starter Toller Boardman tossed 6.0 impressive frames, allowing just the single run on four hits while walking one and striking out five. But Brooklyn reliever Nicco Blank matched him zero for zero until the bottom of the seventh when Connecticut would walk off with a win. The Cyclones righthander issued a one-out walk to Jacob Kapstein and Patrick Mackenzie followed with a single that put runners on first and second. Jose Zambrano then grounded out to first, advancing both runners, for out number two. Will Allen, the Tigers leading hitter, then connected on a 2-1 offering and lined a single into left field scoring the game-winning run.

The loss dropped Brooklyn to 32-39 on the season, ensuring that the Cyclones will have their first losing season in franchise history. Tyler Badamo (4-6) will take the mound for Brooklyn on Thursday, as the Cyclones and Tigers square off in game three of four at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT.
