The Scrappers got timely hitting, and strong pitching in their 11-5 win over the Doubledays at Falcon Park on Wednesday night.
The first highlight was Matt Esparza, who delivered five and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. Esparza allowed four hits, and struck out seven, which tied his previous season-high. Esparza earned his first win of the season.
Mark Mathias had a career night. The Indians' third round pick in this year's draft finished the night 4-for-5 with two singles, a three-run triple, and a two-run home run. Mathias finished the night with a career-high six runs driven in. Austin Fisher also set a season-high in hits in a game with four. Fisher finished 4-for-5.
The Scrappers put up five runs in the top of the second. Juan De La Cruz reached on a strikeout, and advanced to second on an error by Luis Vilorio. De La Cruz singled on an RBI single to left for Fisher. Fisher scored when Ka'ai Tom was hit by a pitch. Then Mathias sent one to the top of the left field wall for a triple to score Gabriel Mejia, Willi Castro, and Tom.
Juan De La Cruz scored on another Fisher single in the top of the third.
Mahoning Valley added three more in the top of the sixth. Fisher and Mejia scored on a single for Castro to left. Castro later scored on a Mathias single.
