State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Juan Perez struck out nine batters, but the State College Spikes took a 8-0 defeat at the hands of the Batavia Muckdogs on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, putting them a game back of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead with five games remaining in the 2015 regular season.
The Spikes' (37-34) loss, combined with West Virginia's 11-inning win over Williamsport, sent the Black Bears into the lead in the Wild Card race.
Perez (4-3) went six innings on the mound, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The right-hander had also struck out 10 Batavia (30-40) batters on July 18 to tie a single-game franchise record.
State College threatened early, loading the bases with one out in the second after a walk to Orlando Olivera followed by base hits from R.J. Dennard and Ronnierd Garcia. However, a double play ended the threat, and the Spikes would be limited to four hits on the night.
Batavia got on the board thanks to Anfernee Seymour's RBI groundout in the third, then added two more runs on Ryan Cranmer's fielder's choice and an error in the fourth. The Muckdogs then piled on more runs, as Angel Reyes tripled in a run in the fifth and singled in another in the seventh.
Reyes was the big bat in the Batavia lineup, finishing just a home run shy of the cycle with a four-hit night. Yuniel Ramirez added three more hits to the Muckdogs attack.
Jordan Holloway (5-6) picked up the win with five innings on the mound. Holloway gave up two hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
State College looks to bounce back and retake the lead in the Wild Card race in a 7:05 p.m. matchup against Batavia on Thursday night. Right-hander Josh Wirsu (0-1) gets the ball for the Spikes in his second start at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Batavia will go with left-hander Dillon Peters (0-2).
