-SPIKES CONTINUE FIRST EXTENDED ROAD TRIP OF THE YEAR:The State College Spikes keep their 10th Season going tonight as they play the second game of a six-game road trip, with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers providing the opposition at Eastwood Field. The road trip, which is the Spikes' first prolonged time away from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this year, includes three games at Mahoning Valley and three games at Staten Island. State College is 46-45 all-time against Mahoning Valley, with a 18-28 mark in games played at Eastwood Field. The Spikes were also on hand for their third different home opener this year as the Scrappers opened up the Eastwood Field slate last night.
-LAST GAME: Jorge Rodriguez tossed a stellar five innings in his second start of the year, and Leobaldo Pina's home run helped stoke the offense as the Spikes got back into the win column with a 6-0 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Thursday night at Eastwood Field. Rodriguez allowed a leadoff single to Willi Castro in the first inning, but after Castro was thrown out at second trying to steal, the right-hander yielded no more hits the rest of the way. The native Dominican gave up just two walks after the first, and struck out six total batters, including the last three he faced. Rodriguez also retired the last ten batters in a row before giving way to the bullpen. Pina helped the Spikes' offensive effort by taking Scrappers reliever Matt Esparza, who was making his professional debut, deep to left field on the first pitch of the sixth inning. The State College shortstop collected a total of three hits on the night and scored two runs.
-MARTINEZ MAKES SECOND START OF YEAR: Right-hander Dailyn Martinez gets the ball tonight for State College. Martinez gave up seven runs, six of them earned, on nine hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings on Sunday against Williamsport at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The righty struck out four in the effort. In 2014, Martinez earned the win for State College against Williamsport on June 16 before being transferred to Rookie-level Johnson City. The Santiago, Dominican Republic native then shone in the Appalachian League playoffs, picking up a pair of wins, including the victory in the deciding third game of the Appy League Championship Series to give Johnson City the title. Martinez's home ERA was 3.41 last year, as opposed to a 6.26 mark posted on the road.
-SCRAPPERS HAND THE BALL TO LINARES: Right-hander Leandro Linares will start on the hill for Mahoning Valley tonight. Linares started and went four innings against West Virginia on the road Sunday, allowing one run on one hit. However, the Villa Clara, Cuba native walked six batters on the night while striking out four. In his debut professional season in the United States last year, Linares went 2-3 with a 7.62 ERA over 11 appearances, three of them starts, for the Rookie-level Arizona League Indians. The righty struck out 38 and walked 29 in the 2014 season after being signed by the Cleveland Indians organization in 2013.
-MAKING MOVES: The Spikes welcomed two new players to State College as outfielder Craig Aikin and infielder Josh Swirchak joined the club Tuesday. Aikin, the Cardinals' 13th-round draft choice this year out of Oklahoma, has now played three games in three nights in three different locations. Swirchak, who signed with the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent out of Wilmington (DE) University shortly after the draft concluded, also came from Johnson City, and is still yet to make his debut.
-SPIKE MARKS: The final pitcher for Mahoning Valley last night was Ryan Perez, the second switch-pitcher the Spikes have ever faced...Perez, Cleveland's 12th-round draft choice in 2015 out of Judson University, only faced one batter and so did not use both arms...The last switch-pitcher to face the Spikes was future major leaguer Pat Venditte of the Staten Island Yankees on Aug. 13, 2008...Mike Pritchard has not struck out yet in 27 plate appearances
