Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - On a night where the Lowell Spinners and Aberdeen IronBirds combined for 10 wild pitches, the Spinners delivered clutch hitting, lead by three doubles from Chad De La Guerra, to earn a come from behind win, 7-2, Friday night at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (7-1) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Tucker Tubbs brought home Luis Alexander Basabe after his one-out triple.
Aberdeen (2-6) took advantage of a bit of wildness from Jake Cosart to take a 2-1 lead. After a lead-off walk, Cosart gave up his first hit of the season to Austin Pfeiffer to put two men on. A one-out walk loaded the bases. After a strikeout, a pair of wild pitches plated both IronBirds runs to give the team a lead.
The score remained there until the fourth inning when Lowell pulled even with another two-out run. Victor Acosta reached on an infield single after a feet-first slide into first base. A wild pitch moved Acosta into scoring position and De La Guerra doubled to the right-centerfield gap, his first professional hit, to even the score at two.
The Spinners took the lead in sixth inning after a one-out double by Tubbs. A wild pitch advanced Tubbs to third and Tubbs scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Ockimey, narrowly beating the throw from Tad Gold, to give Lowell a 3-2 lead.
Lowell extended the lead with a run in the seventh, taking advantage of a leadoff double by De La Guerra and another wild pitch to plate a run. The Spinners broke the game open in the eighth with yet another two-out rally. A single by Ockimey started the rally and another wild pitch advanced him to scoring position. After an Acosta walk, De La Guerra doubled for the third time, plating Ockimey and a Brandon Magee single scored a pair to push the lead to 7-2.
For the third straight game the Spinners had a double-digit hit night, led by De La Guerra's three doubles. Acosta had his third straight multi-hit game, raising his average to .476 on the season. Jhon Nunez added three hits and an RBI, while Magee had two RBI.
Cosart allowed his first hit of the season but struggled with his control, walking five and throwing three wild pitches over three innings. Ben Taylor made his professional debut with two hitless innings, walking one and striking out one. Matt Kent (1-0, 0.00) picked up the win with three scoreless frames, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three. Edwar Garcia closed out the win with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Spinners go for the sweep Saturday evening to conclude the season opening homestand as Jose Almonte (1-0, 1.50) will get the ball for a 5:05 first pitch on Chelmsford Day, with a special visit from Chelmsford native Jeff Bauman and Boston Marathon hero Carlos Arredondo. It's also Red Bandana Giveaway, presented by American Heroes Channel, for the first 1,000 fans.
