-SPIKES RETURN HOME WITH SEVEN-GAME WIN STREAK IN TOW: The State College Spikes come back to Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park tonight to start a six-game homestand with the first game of a three-game set against the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Spikes have won seven consecutive games, and have won their last five in a row at home. Brooklyn is coming off of back-to-back doubleheaders within a span of 24 hours on Monday and Tuesday against Hudson Valley. The Cyclones, who currently sit in second place in the New York-Penn League McNamara Division, are the first out-of-division opponents for the Spikes, who are first in the Pinckney Division. State College is 6-18 all-time against Brooklyn, including a 2-10 mark at home against the Cyclones. Brooklyn has not visited Medlar Field at Lubrano Park since 2012.
-LAST NIGHT: Rowan Wick smashed his New York-Penn League-leading 12th home run of the season, Robelys Reyes hit his first homer of the year, and Jhohan Acevedo drove in four runs as the Spikes ran their winning streak to seven games with a 10-2 victory over the Auburn Doubledays on Tuesday night at Falcon Park.
Wick's two-run shot in the second inning ended a season-long four-game homerless streak, and put the Spikes on the board for the first time. The long ball also bumped Wick's league-leading RBI total to 30, and his 2-for-4 performance at the plate increased his batting average to an even .400 on the year.
Reyes launched a three-run homer to left field to cap a five-run fourth for State College. The switch-hitting shortstop went 2-for-5 as the Spikes' leadoff man. Acevedo delivered a pair of two-run singles to bolster the Spikes' offense, while Nick Thompson brought in the other State College run with his sixth-inning double.
-PONCEDELEON SEEKS STRONG START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon makes his third start and fourth appearance as a professional for State College tonight. Poncedeleon went a career-long three innings in his last outing on Thursday at Batavia. The La Mirada, CA native allowed one run on one hit while striking out three in the start. Poncedeleon, the Cardinals' ninth-round draft choice out of Embry-Riddle University in Florida, was named Second-Team NAIA All-American and First Team All-Sun Conference this past spring after going 9-2 with a 1.60 ERA in 14 starts for Embry-Riddle.
-REYES TO MAKE START FOR CYCLONES: Right-hander Scarlyn Reyes makes his first start for Brooklyn tonight after three appearances out of the bullpen. Reyes, who has usually served as the second half of a "piggyback" setup for the Cyclones, has gone at least three innings in each of his first three outings, striking out 11 and walking four. The Bayaguana, Dominican Republic native pitched for each of the Mets' affiliates in the Dominican Summer League last year, going a combined 5-3 with a 1.41 ERA and 56 strikeouts to 18 walks over 64 innings of work.
-WICK IT...WICK IT REAL GOOD : Rowan Wick grabbed more laurels to begin the 2014 season as he earned the St. Louis Cardinals Player of the Month award last Wednesday and set the Spikes' single-season home run record with his 11th homer later that night. Wick has continued his torrid start to the year, notching his 12th homer of the year last night. The North Vancouver, BC native is currently bidding for the NYPL's Triple Crown, as he added to his league-leading total with his 30th RBI of the year last night, and remains in the NYPL's batting lead.
-SPIKE MARKS: Infielder Robelys Reyes returned to the Spikes on Mondayafter five games with Single-A Peoria, going 1-for-4 and scoring a run as the starting shortstop two night ago..Sunday, 2007 Spikes Pitcher of the Year Tony Watson became the second former Spike to earn a berth in the Major League All-Star Game, as he was named to the NL squad...Watson follows in the footsteps of Allen Craig, who was named to last year's NL squad after playing for the Spikes in 2006...Wick is homering once every 6.67 at-bats...The Spikes' 2.72 team ERA is second in the league behind Hudson Valley (2.54)...Jacob Booden's .120 opponents' batting average is fourth among NYPL relievers...Brian O'Keefe has been hit by five pitches this season, and is tied for the NYPL lead in that category.
