Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - In what was a true Red Sox/Yankees matchup, the Lowell Spinners and Staten Island Yankees labored through a three hour, 13 minute game during which the Yankees emerged victorious, 5-3, Wednesday night at LeLacheur Park.
On NASCAR Night at LeLacheur Park, it was Staten Island (13-13) who raced out to a 1-0 lead. Karsten Whitson ran into trouble early, allowing three hits, walking a batter and throwing a wild pitch, but a caught stealing and some timely pitching allowed the Spinners to escape with just a one run deficit.
After a clean second inning, Whitson ran into trouble again in the third. After a quick out to lead off the inning, Luis Torrens walked and TJ McFarland followed with a two-run home run to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. Following the home run, Whitson (0-1, 8.31) was removed in favor of Willie Ethington, but after six balls Ethington was removed from the game with an injury before Oscar Perez escaped the inning.
Lowell (12-14) scratched out a run in the bottom half of the inning after Franklin Guzman led off the frame with a single. A one-out single by Alixon Suarez moved Guzman to third and a wild pitch brought him home to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Perez tired a bit in the sixth, allowing a leadoff home run to Chris Breen and three straight two out singles to plate a second run as the Yankees pushed their lead to 5-1.
Lowell would make things interesting in the eighth inning against Conor Mullee. Raymel Flores led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Sam Travis reached on a fielding error by McFarland. A Jordan Betts RBI single would score Flores and a one-out walk by Cisco Tellez loaded the bases. Guzman stung a liner to right, but it was unfortunately right at Austin Aune, scoring Travis to cut the lead to two. The Spinners would get no closer however, as Mauricio Dubon grounded out to end the inning.
Offensively Nick Longhi extended his hitting streak to 11-games with a double, while Suarez had a three-hit game to break an 0-for-18 streak.
Whitson suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks in 2.1 innings pitched. Ethington did not retire a batter before leaving with injury and Perez allowed just the two runs in 3.2 innings, striking out four. Brandon Show and Ellis Jimenez kept the Spinners alive, allowing just one hit over three scoreless to give Lowell a chance at a comeback.
The two teams meet again Thursday Night for the Spinners annual Military Appreciation Night. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Canaligator Military Bobble Head, courtesy of US Family Health Plan. Heri Quevedo (1-3, 9.67) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
