State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes saw their winning streak end at seven games and their string of home wins end at five with a 4-0 loss at the hands of the Brooklyn Cyclones on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
State College (18-8) brought the tying run to the plate in both the seventh and eighth innings, but stranded a total of five runners across the two frames. Alex De Leon led the Spikes' offense by reaching base three times on two walks and a double. Robelys Reyes contributed two doubles for State College as well.
Brooklyn (15-11) took the lead on Joe Tuschak's RBI single in the second, and increased it to three runs with Michael Bernal's triple in the third. Tuschak finished off the scoring by hitting a solo home run to right field in the ninth off of new Spikes pitcher Anderson Gerdel.
Cyclones starter Scarlyn Reyes (1-1) made history during the game when the next to last pitch he threw on the night registered at 101 miles per hour on the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park speed gun. Reyes became the first pitcher ever to exceed 100 miles an hour with a pitch during a Spikes game at the ballpark.
The Dominican right-hander earned the win for Brooklyn after tossing five innings of five-hit ball. Reyes walked one batter and struck out four along the way.
Spikes starter Daniel Poncedeleon (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and four walks over 2 2/3 innings of work. Poncedeleon recorded five strikeouts in the effort.
Gerdel, who pitched the ninth inning for the Spikes, was making his first appearance in a State College uniform after making eighth appearances at Rookie-level Johnson City this season.
Nick Thompson added multiple hits at the plate for State College.
Despite the loss, the Spikes maintained their lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division by a game-and-a-half over Batavia.
Thursday, the Spikes and Cyclones meet for the second game of their three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Cody Schumacher (0-0) on the mound for State College, to be opposed by Brooklyn right-hander Casey Meisner (0-1).
