Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen Plasters Staten Island, Takes Series Victory

A seven-run top of the fifth inning powered the Aberdeen IronBirds to a 9-2 victory over the Staten Island Yankees. RBIs from Austin Anderson, Jamill Moquete, Tanner Murphy, and Steve Wilkerson led the fifth inning onslaught of runs. Nik Nowottnick earned the win in relief, allowing only two hits and no runs in 3.1 innings, after he replaced starter Stephen Tarpley in the fourth inning.

Turning It Around

After a dismal 1-16 start to the season, the IronBirds have turned it around as of late, going 5-3 over their last eight games and scoring 46 runs over that stretch. They also earned their first two series victories on the season, taking two games each from both the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Staten Island Yankees.

Anderson Impressive in First Pro Starts

After making his professional debut on July 6, Austin Anderson has made his mark already on the Aberdeen IronBirds. Anderson, selected in the 9th-round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, has four hits in his first thirteen at-bats. Along with his four hits, he also has four RBIs and four runs.

The Muckdogs Come to Town

The IronBirds will host the Batavia Muckdogs at Ripken Stadium for the first and only time the two teams will meet this season. Currently on a three-game winning streak, the Muckdogs are 16-8 and are in second place in the Pinckney Division. Tonight's starter, Jorgan Cavanerio, is 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 21.0 innings pitched. In his last start against the State College Spikes on July 3, he allowed ten hits, six earned runs, four walks, and struck out one batter in four innings pitched.

Steve Johnson Making Rehab Start

Aberdeen will send Steve Johnson to the mound tonight, as he will make a rehab start tonight at Ripken Stadium. Johnson, who was acquired via trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers, last appeared at the Major League level in September, 2013. The Baltimore native made five starts for the Triple-A affiliate Norfolk Tides, but a shoulder injury forced him to rehab in the Gulf Coast League. Johnson appeared with the IronBirds last year, making two starts and pitching a total of six innings. He allowed a total of five hits and two runs in those two starts.
