-SPIKES START SECOND HALF OF HOMESTAND AGAINST SPINNERS: The Spikes surged last night to cap the first half of a six-game homestand with a win, and now welcome the Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the opener of a three-game series. State College is now one of seven teams within a game of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead, with Lowell being another. The Spikes salvaged the last gmae of a three-game set against Vermont to open the homestnad. State College is 12-13 all-time against Lowell, but 8-4 against the Spinners at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

-LAST GAME: Casey Grayson led the Spikes' offensive onslaught with three hits and two runs batted in as the club reached double-digit runs for the second time this season in a 10-1 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. One night after being shut out on four hits, the Spikes jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Two runs in the first and two more in the second put the Spikes in front. After Vermont ended Juan Perez's 13-inning shutout streak with Trace Loehr's infield single to score a run in the second, the Spikes let loose for five runs in the fifth. Ten batters came to the plate for the Spikes, with Jhohan Acevedo's two-run triple and Leobaldo Pina's run-scoring double the big hits. Orlando Olivera also knocked in a run for State College in the frame, which matched the largest single-inning output for the Spikes this season. Grayson's RBI double capped the scoring in the sixth.

-BECK GETS BALL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Landon Beck gets the ball for State College tonight. Beck earned his first save of the season last time out, throwing four scoreless frames as he teamed with Juan Perez to shut out Hudson Valley last Friday. The product of Anderson University in South Carolina is still looking for his first win of the year at home, but provided a quality start in a loss to Tri-City on July 12. Beck has struck out 27 batters and walked just six this year, with three free passes coming in one game against Batavia on July 19.

-SPINNERS SEND ALMONTE TO HILL: Right-hander Jose Almonte makes his eighth start of the year for Lowell this evening. Almonte threw 67 pitches in just two innings on Saturday and gave up three runs to draw the loss against Auburn. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native gave up just one hit, but walked four batters and hit another. Almonte began the season with back-to-back wins, going six innings in each, but has posted a 6.00 ERA in the month of July. The righty has found success away from home, compiling a 1.62 ERA in three road outings.

-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson is still near the top of several leaderboards in the New York-Penn League. The University of Houston product is second in the NYPL in batting average with a .339 mark. Grayson's .433 on-base percentage is third in the league, and he occupies spots in the NYPL's top five in hits (T-2nd, 43), runs batted in (T-4th, 24) and walks (3rd, 22). The Cypress, TX native has also reached base in every home game he has played this season, a 20-game string.

-PINA SURGING AT THE PLATE: Leobaldo Pina's four-hit game on Sunday was his second of the season, following the quartet of knocks he produced against Tri-City on July 15, and increased his average from .279 to .299 over the weekend. Pina is now tied with Grayson for second in the league with 43 hits.

-SPIKE MARKS: Mike Pritchard is second in the NYPL in runs scored with 25...Ian McKinney (7th, 2.43) and Juan Perez (5th, 2.27) are both in the top ten in the NYPL in ERA...Pedro Echemendia, who earned his fourth relief win last night, is now tied for the league lead with 13 appearances...Tate Matheny, son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, is playing for Lowell after being drafted in the fourth round by the Red Sox this June.
