Williamsport Rallies Late For 6-3 Win Over Vermont

WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- The Williamsport Crosscutters rallied from a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and four more runs in the eighth for a 6-3 come-from-behind victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Bowman Field.

Vermont jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Skye Bolt led off the game with a double and later scored on a Brett Siddall sacrifice fly that also scored Seth Brown on a throwing error by leftfielder Zach Coppola. Seong-min Kim gave the Lake Monsters a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning with a one-out solo home run, his team-leading fourth homer of the season and Vermont's league-leading 23rd home run overall.

Lake Monsters starter Dustin Driver allowed just four hits with one walk and two strikeouts over five scoreless innings. Driver gave up back-to-back singles and hit a batter with one out in the second, but got out of the bases loaded jam with an inning-ending 3-6-1 double play. After giving up a leadoff double in the third, Driver retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced (two-out walk in fifth only baserunner).

But the Crosscutters got their rally started in the seventh inning of Vermont reliever Kevin Duchene with an RBI groundout and Mark Laird RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Then in the eighth, Jose Pujols led off with his 12th double and scored three batters later to tie the game on a wild pitch by James Naile, who had relieved Duchene with runners on first and third with one out. Carlos Duran followed with an RBI single and Austin Bossart an RBI double before Laird added another RBI single to five Williamsport the 6-3 lead.

Williamsport starter Mitch Gueller, who entered the game leading the league in wins (5) and second in ERA (2.27), allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts over five innings. Reliever Andrew Godail tossed two scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and one strikeout for the win, while Rob Tasin a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save. The victory improved Williamsport to a league-best 26-14 overall, including 19-6 at Bowman Field.

Bolt and Kim both had two hits to lead Vermont (16-23), which lost for just the third time when leading after both six and seven innings (now 12-3). Duchene was charged with four runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings to take the loss, while Naile picked up his second straight blown save as he allowed two runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Vermont, which has lost two straight after two consecutive wins to start the roadtrip, plays two more games at Williamsport on Saturday (7:05) and Sunday (5:05) before returning to historic Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Monday night against the Staten Island Yankees.
