Yankees End Losing Skid with 8-4 Win

After losing their last five games, the Staten Island Yankees (20-18) slugged their way to a victory against division foe the Aberdeen IronBirds (19-20), 8-4.

In the first inning, Kyle Holder, Thairo Estrada and Junior Valera collected three consecutive singles, sending Holder all the way around for the first run of game. With Estrada and Valera in scoring position, Krill hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Estrada for a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Jeff Hendrix singled to center then Holder moved him over to second with a bunt, allowing Valera, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, to drive home Hendrix to make the score 3-0.

The IronBirds bats woke up in the fourth inning. Chris Shaw drew a walk from Staten Island starter Luis Cedeno then Austin Pfeiffer and Mike Odenwaelder collected back-to-back singles to plate Shaw, cutting the lead to 3-1.

The Baby Bombers got the run right back in the bottom half of the fourth. Kevin Cornelius doubled to left field, followed by a single from Jake Hernandez. Zack Zehner then brought Cornelius home with a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-1.

In the fifth inning, James Reeves (W, 1-0) took over for Cedeno, and Aberdeen took advantage. Ricardo Andujar and D.J. Stewart collected back-to-back singles then Randolph Gassaway drew a walk to load the bases. Reeves almost got out of the inning, getting Steve Laurino to line into a double play, but Shaw singled to right to plate Stewart to continue the inning. Pfeiffer then doubled to left field, bringing home both Gassaway and Shaw to tie the game, 4-4.

Holder, who also went 3-for-4, singled to start the bottom half of the inning. Valera continued his hot streak at the plate, smashing a double to right field to bring home Holder to put Staten Island ahead, 5-4.

Elias Pinales replaced Aberdeen starter Travis Seabrooke (L, 2-4) in the sixth inning, and the Yankees added to their lead to put the game out of reach for the IronBirds. Jhalan Jackson singled to third then stole second base, putting himself in prime position to score on a Zehner single to put the score at 6-4.

Staten Island continued to add to the lead after the seventh inning stretch. Holder collected his third hit of the game, then advanced to third on an Estrada double to center. Jackson plated both runners with a single to left field, giving the game its final score of 8-4
