Lowell Spinners News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PENN. - Brandon Magee had three hits and the Lowell Spinners scored six runs in the eighth inning en route to a 9-3 win over the State College Spikes Friday night at Lubrano Park.
Lowell (21-19) got the scoring started in the first after Luis Alexander Basabe led off the game with a base hit. He would come around to score on Chad De La Guerra's fourth sacrifice fly of the season, giving the Spinners an early 1-0 lead.
State College (19-20) pulled even in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a lead-off single by Mike Pritchard. After a walk and fly out moved Pritchard to third he came around to score on a ground out by Orlando Olivera, knotting the score at one.
The Spinners rebounded promptly in the top of the fifth. After back-to-back strikeouts to lead off the inning, Magee tripled to the gap in left-centerfield, scoring on Basabe's ground rule double to allow Lowell to re-take the lead, 2-1.
The Spikes however would re-take the lead in the sixth inning after back-to-back walks from Jose Almonte led off the inning. After a deep fly advanced both runners into scoring position, Matt Kent came out of the bullpen. He would strike out Casey Grayson to start his outing but Olivera singled through the hole to give State College a 3-2 lead.
After tying the game in the seventh on a two-out double by Magee, the Spinners broke the game open the in the eighth, plating six runs en route to a 9-3 lead. Victor Acosta gave Lowell the lead with a two-run double and the insurance runs were flowing from there as the Spinners scored on an RBI triple from Kyri Washington, a pair on a double from Austin Rei and a final run on a Basabe sacrifice fly.
Magee led a Spinners line-up that saw four players record multi-hit games, recording a career-high three hits, coming just a home run short of the cycle. Basabe, Jeremy Rivera and Acosta each added two-hit games as part of the 12-hit Lowell attack.
Almonte danced around trouble all night, allowing just one hit over 5.1 innings. The right-hander walked four however, leading to three State College runs. He struck out six. Kent (3-0, 1.38) was charged with a blown save, allowing both inherited runners to score, but picked up the win, striking out three over 3.2 scoreless.
The two teams meet again Saturday night when Dioscar Romero (2-2, 3.26) gets the ball for a 7pm first pitch.
