Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (18-20) are officially the hottest team in the New York-Penn League after a 6-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats (22-18) at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Friday night.

Mahoning Valley is 8-2 in its last 10, and they've won four straight. After two decent starts for Leandro Linares, Friday night was the old news for Linares. He lasted four innings allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out four. The issue remained the same: he walked five.

Linares gave away to the bullpen. Brock Hartson (3-0) and Matt Esparza combined to go five innings, allowing just two hits, no runs, walking one, and striking out four.

Tri-City got its only run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single for Aaron Mizell.

In the fifth, the Scrappers scored four. Connor Marabell scored on a Sam Haggerty ground out. Jodd Carter scored on an RBI single for Ka'ai Tom. Haggerty and Tom later scored on an RBI single for Mark Mathias. That single helped Mathias extend his hit streak to 11 games.

In the top of the sixth, Daniel Salters was the first batter Harold Arauz faced in relief of Junior Garcia. Salters took a fastball over the right center field dance for his first professional home run. That home run helped Salters extend his hit streak to 11 games.

The Scrappers added another run in the top of the eighth. Connor Marabell hit an RBI double to plate Nate Winfrey.

The bullpen has allowed 13 hits, one run, and has struck out 27 in its last 28.2 innings pitched. Hartson earned the win, and lowered his ERA to 1.23, while Esparza lowered his to 2.40. Junior Garcia (0-1) earned the loss for Tri-City.

Shao-Ching Chiang takes the hill for Mahoning Valley on Saturday night at 7:00.
