-SPIKES START MINI-SERIES AT MAHONING VALLEY: The State College Spikes head to Eastwood Field in Niles, OH tonight for the first game of a two-game set against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. State College was swept by Mahoning Valley in a three-game series earlier this year at Eastwood Field, but recovered for a series victory against the Scrappers at Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park. The Spikes are 26-30 all-time against the Scrappers.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes took control early against the Williamsport Crosscutters, scoring three runs in the first inning and letting strong pitching from Jordan Cooper and Orlando Castro carry them to a 5-1 win against the 'Cutters on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College got four innings of quality work from both Cooper in a starting role and Castro in relief. Cooper allowed only an unearned run in the second inning, and yielded three hits total. Castro made his Spikes debut on Monday after coming up from the Gulf Coast League, and immediately made a mark with four shutout, one-hit innings.
-DODSON MAKES REHAB START FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Zack Dodson gets the ball for State College tonight in the second start of his Minor League rehab assignment from Single-A West Virginia. The Natalia, TX native allowed four runs on six hits while striking out five over three innings against Staten Island on Thursday, but did not factor in the decision. Dodson made 13 starts for the Spikes last year in 15 total appearances.
-ROBERTS GETS THE BALL FOR SCRAPPERS: Mahoning Valley will go with right-hander Will Roberts on the mound tonight in just his second professional start. Roberts, the Indians' fifth-round draft pick this year out of the University of Virginia, went 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA in 18 appearances (17 starts) for the Cavaliers this past spring. Roberts went 1 2/3 scoreless innings against Connecticut on Friday in his first professional start.
