Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The Aberdeen IronBirds look for their third straight win tonight against the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets). The IronBirds completed their third-straight series win last night as they defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 10-5. In the win, the IronBirds set season highs in runs scored and hits (16). Joe Velleggia tied a season-high with four hits, while Martin Serrata and Mychal Givens chipped in three hits apiece. Tonight, the IronBirds will have right-hander Jake Cowan on the mound. Cowan is looking for his first win of the 2011 season. He'll go up against the New York-Penn League's strikeout leader in Eduardo Aldama.

Don't Call it a Come Back

After a 2-17 start to the 2011 season, the IronBirds have gone 7-5 over their last 12 games. They've completed three consecutive series wins. Over the past five games, the IronBirds are batting .311 as a team with 33 runs scored.

Velleggia is En Fuego

Over the past six games, Velleggia has raised his batting average from .232 to a team-leading .313. Over that stretch, Velleggia is hitting .519 with two four-hit games. He's hit three homers and driven in eight runs. He's hit safely in six straight and has at least one RBI in each of those games. Velleggia is now leading the IronBirds in each of the Triple Crown categories.

Hit Streaks

Five different IronBirds hitters are currently riding five-game or better hitting streaks. They're led by center fielder Glynn Davis, who has hit safely in an Aberdeen season-high nine consecutive games. Dudley Leonora, who is batting .315 in the month of July, is riding a seven-game hit streak. As mentioned before, Velleggia has hit safely in six straight. Givens and Wynston Sawyer are immersed in five-game hit streaks.

Brooklyn Blues

The IronBirds will host the Cyclones for two games at Ripken Stadium, before traveling to Coney Island for two more contests Thursday and Friday. Aberdeen has struggled mightily against Brooklyn over the past two seasons. After going just 1-9 last season against the Cyclones, the IronBirds are off to just a 1-5 start this year against them.
