Starters Dominate as Snappers, Chiefs Split Two

BELOIT, WI - Raul Alcantara threw a complete game shutout for the Beloit Snappers as they defeated the Peoria Chiefs 4-0 in the second game of a Midwest League doubleheader at Pohlman Field on Friday night with 315 in attendance. The Chiefs won game one 2-0 behind the stellar pitching of Joe Cuda.

Beloit now has an 18-14 record after taking three out of four in this series. Peoria stays at .500 at 15-15.

Alcantara (5-1) was spectacular in throwing his first career shutout. He allowed a single to the game's first batter, Breyvic Valera, and didn't allow another hit for the rest of the night. He also didn't walk a batter and picked up three strikeouts. After hitting a batter in the second, Alcantara retired the next 11 in a row before the streak was broken by an error. He rebounded by setting down the evening's last six men in order, sealing the win.

The Snappers lineup didn't need to do much, but they came through, providing plenty of run support for the win against Kurt Heyer (2-1). Singles by Matt Olson (3-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Chad Lewis started a second inning rally and Olson broke the scoreless tie by denting home on a wild pitch. Nick Rickles then proceeded to drive in Lewis with another single.

In the fourth, Olson tacked on run number three by drilling a solo homer out to right-center, his fourth of the season, and he also added insurance in the sixth with an RBI double.

The star of the first game was Cuda (2-1), who completely neutralized the Snappers lineup over five frames. The only hits he allowed were four singles and two of those were erased on double plays. He never allowed a runner to reach scoring position and did not issue a walk while striking out four. Bruce Maxwell was the lone bright spot for Beloit, as he went three-for-three on the afternoon.

Peoria picked up the necessary runs for the victory in the very first inning with the help of a couple defensive miscues. Valera started the game with an infield single and an error on the play moved him to second. The next batter was Alex Mejia, who reached on another error. Jacob Wilson (1-3, RBI) drove in Valera with a single off starter Dakota Bacus (3-1) and, following a bunt, Patrick Wisdom hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Zach Petrick came on in the sixth to close it out, retired the side in order in that frame and shutout the Snappers in the seventh for his fourth save.

On Saturday, the Cedar Rapids Kernels come to town for the start of a three game series. The first pitch for game one will be at 4:00pm as the Snappers and RHP Michael Ynoa (0-0, 1.00 ERA) will go up against the Kernels and RHP Tyler Duffey (3-1, 2.60 ERA).
