
Heinrich, Barber Selected Scholar-Athletes of April

MIDLAND, Mich. - Two student-athletes from the Great Lakes Bay Region have been selected as the April winners of the ESPN 100.9-FM Scholar-Athlete of the Month, presented by Hammer Restoration. Laura Heinrich, a senior from Midland, and James Barber, a senior from St. Charles, were both honored on ESPN 100.9-FM's local sports talk show, Crunch Time.
Heinrich is a two-sport athlete, playing volleyball and softball for the Chemics. On the field, Heinrich was a captain on the volleyball team in 2013, while also being a three-time captain on the softball team beginning in 2010. A three-time honorable mention honoree of the Saginaw Valley League in volleyball, Heinrich was a member of the Midland volleyball team that won the SVL Championship in 2012, as well as district titles in 2011 and 2012.
Off the field, the National Honor Society member maintains a 4.1 GPA and is in the top 10 percent of her class. An honor roll member each semester in high school, Heinrich has been named to the SVL All-Academic team three times, along with being honored as a Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association All-Academic individual in 2012.
Barber, who is a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and golf, has limited ability to play sports due to a heart condition. Barber plays golf, but is only allowed to kick field goals for the football team and practices on a limited basis with the basketball team.
Barber, who holds a 3.87 GPA is also an active member in many organizations throughout the school and community, including: National Honor Society, Perr Mentoring Crew, Great Lakes Leadership Institute, Special Olympics and Read Across America. He is a member of student council, as his class representative and is also a volunteer youth basketball coach.

Each month during the prep sports season, one male and female student-athlete is chosen for the ESPN 100.9-FM Scholar-Athlete of the Month Award, presented by Hammer Restoration. Winning candidates show excellence in academics, athletics and leadership. Nominations for future months are currently being accepted at ESPN1009.com. Student-athletes must be nominated by a coach, teacher or administrator.
