Burlington Bees News Release
The Burlington Bees got sensational pitching performances by Alex Keudell and Eduard Santos, but the offense struggled, as the Bees were defeated in both games of a doubleheader by the Kane County Cougars.
The Bees (11-18) lost game one of the doubleheader on Friday night by a 2-1 final in 10 innings and were knocked off 4-1 by the Cougars (16-15) in the second game of the doubleheader.
Keudell showed why he is one of the aces on the Bees staff, firing seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits and one walk. The lone run he allowed came in the sixth when Marco Hernandez singled home Bijan Rademacher.
The score was 1-0 in favor of the Cougars until Anthony Bemboom led off the sixth with his first home run of the year. Sherman Johnson walked and stole second to put a man in scoring position with one out. He advanced to third on an infield single by Wade Hinkle. However, Chevy Clarke's squeeze attempt went right to Steve Perakslis, who flipped the ball home to get Johnson trying to score.
In the game, the Bees put a man at second base with no outs in three separate innings, but could not bring him home.
The squandered opportunities came back to hurt Burlington in the tenth when Rademacher scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Oliver Zapata off of Joey Krehbiel (1-3).
Nathan Dorris (1-0) delivered two perfect innings out of the bullpen for the win, while Ian Dickson worked around a one-out single by Pedro Toribio in the bottom of the tenth to secure his first save.
In game two of the doubleheader, Eduard Santos (0-1) fired five no-hit innings, but his offense did not score until the sixth, leaving him as the hard-luck loser.
Santos had a no-hitter going before allowing a leadoff single to David Bote in the sixth. Santos tried to pick off Bote, but threw the ball past Michael Bolaski, allowing Bote to advance all the way to third. Bote scored the first run of the game when Oliver Zapata singled him home. Zapata later scored in the frame to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Burlington tried to rally back, scoring one run in the sixth after Kyle Johnson walked, stole second and third and came home on an error by Willson Contreras, who tried to catch Johnson stealing third. Johnson is now 21-for-21 in stolen base attempts. After Johnson scored, the Bees tried to add one more against Felix Pena (2-0), but he got Michael Bolaski to strike out with men on the corners to end the inning.
Garrett Baker allowed two solo home runs to Rock Shoulders and Rademacher in the seventh, and the Bees left the bases loaded in the seventh against Eddie Orozco, who picked up his second save of the season.
Burlington will now hit the road for six games, beginning with a trip to Wisconsin to face the Timber Rattlers for three games. The series in Appleton will begin on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. You can listen to all the action on News Radio 1490 KBUR or gobees.com.
