
Kernels Sweep Bandits on Friday

DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Kernels swept a doubleheader from the Quad Cities River Bandits on Friday at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport. The Kernels got excellent starts from Hudson Boyd and Mason Melotakis. The team scored a pair of runs in extra innings of game one to break a scoreless tie for the win, and they scored runs early to cruise to the win in game two.
In game one, the Kernels topped the Bandits 2-0 in 11 innings. The game was scoreless through ten innings before a Dalton Hicks RBI double to deep left field in the 11th inning scored Jorge Polanco. Polanco was running from first on the play and came home to score, breaking the scoreless tie. Adam Brett Walker followed with a RBI double down the left field line to bring Hicks home and put the Kernels up 2-0.
Hudson Boyd pitched 6 scoreless innings for the Kernels on the mound, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1. Boyd held the Bandits hitless through the first 4.1 innings. Steve Gruver went 3.1 innings in relief, allowing 0 runs on 4 hits. He struck out 2 and walked 1. Tim Atherton (2-1) pitched the final 1.2 innings for the win, allowing 0 runs on 0 hits while striking out 3 and walking 0.
Cameron Lamb (1-2) allowed 2 runs over 3.1 innings for Quad Cities for the loss in relief. Josh Fields started and pitched 2 scoreless innings for the Bandits. Fields was making a MLB rehab start for the Houston Astros. He allowed 1 hit while striking out 3 and walking 0.
In game one, Adam Brett Walker had 3 hits for the Kernels while Jorge Polanco and Dalton Hicks both had 2 hits. The Kernels struck out a season-high 16 times in the game.
In game two, the Kernels offense scored early while starter Mason Melotakis was fantastic in a 5-1 win over the Bandits.
It took until the 11th inning to score a run in the game one, but the Kernels plated 4 runs in the 1st inning of game two. The Kernels sent 9 men to the plate and picked up 6 hits in the inning, including 4 extra-base hits. Niko Goodrum tripled and scored on Jorge Polanco's RBI single. Dalton Hicks doubled home Polanco to put the Kernels up by a pair. Then, Travis Harrison and Tyler Grimes hit back to back RBI doubles to make the score 4-0.
Adam Brett Walker tripled in the 3rd inning and came home on Travis Harrison's RBI single, extending the Kernels lead to 5-0.
Mason Melotakis (3-1) went 5.1 innings for the win, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits. He struck out a career-high 9 River Bandits. His 9 strikeouts were the most by a Kernels pitcher this season. Josh Burris pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 1 and walking 2.
