Peoria Chiefs News Release
Beloit, WI- The Peoria Chiefs won game one of the doubleheader 2-0 Friday over the Beloit Snappers but the hosts bounced back to take the nightcap 4-0. The split puts the Chiefs at 15-15 on the season as they head to Quad Cities for another double header and a four-game series.
In game one the Chiefs got the bats going early and scored against Beloit's Dakota Bacus in the top of the first. Breyvic Valera led off with an infield single to third and took second base on a throwing error by Renato Nunez. With Valera running, Alex Mejia reached first on an error by Bacus to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jacob Wilson put the Chiefs in top 1-0 with his team-leading 27th RBI of the season on a single to right. Jordan Walton sacrificed both runners up 90 feet and Mejia scored on a sac fly by Patrick Wisdom for a 2-0 Chiefs lead.
Joe Cuda (2-1) threw five shutout innings with four singles allowed. He did not issue a walk and struck out four while the Chiefs infield turned two double plays. Zach Petrick threw two scoreless innings for his fourth save of the season. He allowed one single and struck out three to preserve the game one win.
The Chiefs started game two with a single by Valera against Raul Alcantara. However that would be their last hit of the day as the Snappers right-hander stranded Valera at third following two pick-off errors. Peoria put Carson Kelly on with a hit by pitch in the second and Gerwuins Velazco reached on an error in the sixth for their third and final base runner of the game.
Beloit meanwhile strung together hits in the second to get on the board against Kurt Heyer. Matt Olson led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Chad Lewis singled to put runners on the corners and with one out a wild pitch plated Olson with the first run of the game. Nick Rickles singled home Lewis and Beloit led 2-0 after two.
The Snappers went on top 3-0 when Olson led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to right-center, his fourth of the season. They padded the lead in the sixth as John Wooten tripled and Olson doubled him home for a 4-0 advantage before Joe Donofrio relieved Heyer and escaped the inning.
Heyer (2-1) took the loss allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four with two wild pitches, Donofrio retired the only batter he faced. Alcantara (5-1) threw a seven-inning complete game shutout for Beloit and moved to 2-0 against the Chiefs this season with two hits allowed over 14 innings in those two starts.
