Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Wildly outshot for the second night in a row, the Lincoln Stars completed a back-to-back sweep of the Dubuque Fighting Saints, taking the second game in the weekend 4-1 on Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
Lincoln capitalized on a tremendous second period effort, as they did the night prior. Ludvig Hoff continued his outstanding start to the season, as he deflected a point shot past Hunter Miska early in the second period. Hoff, the league's leading scorer, scored his sixth goal of the season on the play. He has not gone a game without a point to start the season.
The eventual game-winner came on a second period power play, as Ethen Frank took a cross-ice feed from Biagio Lerario and stashed the pass home to put the Stars up 2-1.
Cue the barrage. Dubuque outshot Lincoln 14-8 in the third period, and came close time after time to tying the game. Stars netminder Patrik Virtanen denied 30 Fighting Saints shots throughout the night, following up Peyton Jones' 36-save effort from the night prior.
Dubuque took the lead after the first period of play, as Nathan Sucese utilized tremendous hand-eye coordination to bash home a rebound to take a 1-0 lead. Keegan Mantaro and Spenser Young picked up the assists on Sucese's second goal of the season.
Late in the third period, after Dubuque's shot barrage and Miska at the bench for the extra attacker, Patrick Polino and Lerario both added empty netters to seal the deal for the Stars. Lerario's goal came with one second left in regulation time.
Through the weekend series, Lincoln outscored Dubuque 5-1 in the second period. Three of those goals came on Friday night, and the remaining two on Saturday night.
Stars defenseman Christian Evers capped a tremendous night, adding four assists, and finishing the game +3.
The Fighting Saints return to action on Friday, October 16 as the Youngstown Phantoms come to town for a 7:05 p.m. start. Join the Fighting Saints for Country Night, presented by 97.7 FM WGLR, as the game will be played with country music-themed activities throughout the night.
