Omaha Lancers News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - Brannon McManus scored his first two USHL goals while Zackarias Skog made 36 saves as the Omaha Lancers defeated the defending Clark Cup Champion Sioux Falls Stampede 4-1 on Saturday night in front of 5,433 inside the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Lancers got on the board first. A pass from Hank Crone below the goal line went to the left point for an awaiting Jake Gingell. Gingell saw a lane and fired the shot towards the front of the net while Josh French angled his stick deflecting the puck over the shoulder of goaltender Ales Stezka for a 1-0 lead at 10:16 of the opening period. The two assists were credited to Jake Gingell and Hank Crone.
Another deflection in front of the net helped give the Lancers a two-goal lead towards the end of the opening period. Brannon McManus picked up the puck to the left of the net, spun, and sent a low shot on net that was tipped by Nick Rivera. The tip by Rivera went by Ales Stezka for a 2-0 advantage with 3:51 left in the first period.
In the second period, Brannon McManus and Mitch Perrault went in on a two-on-one chance offensively. Perrault took the pass in the right circle from McManus, immediately returned it, and McManus fired it over the shoulder of Ales Stezka for his first USHL goal and a 3-0 lead for the Omaha Lancers with 5:26 left. Perrault had the only assist on the goal for his second helper on the night.
With less than four seconds left in the period, Sioux Falls got on the board. A shot on net was initially denied with a great save by Zackarias Skog. Collin Peters then skated to the bottom of the right wing circle and snapped in the rebound with 3.6 seconds left to pull the Stampede within a pair of goal heading into the third period. Assists on the Peters goal were credited to Alex Stevens and Aaron Miller.
The only goal in the final period came again off the stick of Brannon McManus for his second of the season and night. Mitch Perrault joined McManus again for a two-on-one opportunity. Inside the left wing circle, McManus put on the breaks and sent a low shot by the right leg pad of Stezka for a 4-1 advantage at 10:44 of the third frame. Nick Rivera and Johan Steen had the assist on McManus' goal.
That held up as the final with Zackarias Skog picking up his second win of the year with a 36-save performance in net.
The Omaha Lancers return home to Ralston Arena on Friday night as they host the Sioux City Musketeers.
