Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-For the second night in a row the Stampede out shot and out chanced their opponent, but for the second night in a row they struggled to score goals and lost. The Omaha Lancers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and never gave up the lead as they downed the Stampede 4-1 before 5, 433 fans at the PREMIER Center Saturday night. Collin Peters tallied the lone goal for the Herd who outshot the Lancers 37-21, but fell to 1-3-0 on the season. Ales Stezka stopped 17 shots in goal for Sioux Falls while Zack Skog stopped 36 of 37 shots to earn the win for the Lancers who improved to 4-2-0 on the season. Both teams had energy in the first period, but it was the Lancers who took advantage of a couple opportunities and two goals in the period. Omaha opened the scoring at 10:16 when Josh French tallied his second goal in as many goals. Jake Gingell fired a shot from the left point that was redirected by French who tucked it just under the top crossbar to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. The Herd had a couple power play opportunities, but couldn't convert and the Lancers would make them pay with their second goal of the period at 16:09 when Grant Gabriele finished a great tic-tac-toe pass from Brannon McManus and Mitch Perrault. The Lancers took that 2-0 lead into the locker room, despite being outshot by the Herd 12-8.
It remained that way through most of the second period until the 14:34 mark when Perrault had a beautiful give-and-go when he found Brannon McManus open in the left circle who one-timed the pass into the back of the net to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead. Sioux Falls continued to put good pressure on the Lancers and create scoring chances, but were still scoreless. Just as it appeared the Herd might go five scoreless periods on the weekend, Sioux Falls found the back of the net. Just as the puck nearly left the zone, Alex Stevens kept the puck in from the right point and fired a shot on net that was stopped by Omaha goaltender Zack Skog who made a kick save, but the rebound went to the stick of Collin Peters who quickly slapped it into the back of the net to get the Herd on the board at 3-1. Sioux Falls outshot the Lancers 10-7 in the period.
Sioux Falls was hoping to use some of that momentum into the third period and they did just that, posting 15 shots in the period, but Omaha goaltender Zack Skog continued to play strong and shut down the Stampede offense, making save after save and keeping the Herd off the board. With the Herd still trailing by two goals, the Lancers put the game away for good at 10:44 of the third when McManus tallied his second goal of the night, this time taking the puck in front of the Stampede net and sliding it past the left leg of Stezka to give the Lancers a 4-1 lead and they would never look back.
The Herd finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play, but the penalty kill was strong again, killing off all three penalties. The Stampede went 7-for-7 on the penalty kill on the weekend.
Sioux Falls will look to get back into the win column this Tuesday when they host the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05 PM inside the PREMIER Center. It's the first Furniture Mart Family 4 Pack night where fans can get 4 lower level tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas and 1 large popcorn for just $49. These tickets are only available through the Stampede office or by calling 336-6060.
