Madison Capitols News Release
Muskegon, MI - The Madison Capitols (2-2-0) received a spectacular performance from their 17-year-old goalie and more potent offense in a 4-0 romp of the Muskegon Lumberjacks (1-2-0) on Saturday at the L.C. Walker Arena.
After playing a game on Friday that featured ten goals and lots of turnovers leading to scoring chances, the Capitols found themselves in a defensive struggle in the opening period. After both teams killed off brief power plays, the Lumberjacks and Capitols could only muster 11 shots in the first period, with Ryan Edquist stopping seven Muskegon offerings.
Edquist, making his second USHL start, kept the score deadlocked on a couple of dangerous point blank chances from Rem Pitlick, including a shoulder save as Pitlick tried to beat Edquist from the left circle.
Muskegon picked up the period's lone full two-minute power play, but could not strike as the Capitols held Muskegon at bay.
Edquist's ability to hold the fort bought his squad time to find the offensive juices in the middle period. After picking up an early power play, Haralds Egle went to his office in the left wing corner, banking one off a Lumberjacks defenseman and into the goal at 2:46 to make it 1-0.
The Capitols would not be done, but they had to fend off some Muskegon advances, as Edquist made a pair of stellar penalty kill saves on Matej Paulovic on a jam attempt and Collin Adams on a backdoor play respectively.
After killing Muskegon's power play, Madison upped the ante at the other end. First, Ryan Lohin surprised Lumberjack goalie Joey Daccord from the left wing side, banking one off the inside of the goalie's legs to make it 2-0 at 10:59. It was Lohin's fifth point of the season, and extended his season opening point streak to four games.
Just 57 seconds later, armed with another power play, the Capitols potted a second man-up goal from the team's hottest goal scorer. After Egle missed an open net on a back door play, Egle recovered in the right corner and saucered a pass to Tyson McLellan, who blasted a slapper over Daccord's glove at 11:56. McLellan now has four goals in his first four games as a Capitol.
Any hopes Muskegon had for making a comeback try were dashed just 1:09 into the third period, as Sam McCormick finished a perfect tic-tac-toe passing play from Lohin and Alexandre Payusov to bump the Madison lead to 4-0.
McCormick now has three goals in his first three games of the young season, joining McLellan in the goal-a-game club.
While he had a big cushion to work with, Edquist continued to steal the show in the third, fending off a total of five Muskegon power plays on the night in finishing his second USHL start with a 40-save shutout. He was tested in the final three minutes in a dangerous looking three-on-two, but he came up with a slot answer on Collin Adams for his 40th and final stop.
The Capitols look to piggyback the momentum of a 10-goal weekend when they complete a span of five road games in their first six overall contests against the U.S. U17 National Team Development Program. Puck drop on Oct. 16-17 from Plymouth, Mich. is set for 6 p.m. CT each night. Coverage can be heard on 106.7 FM/1670 AM, The Zone.
Madison returns to the Alliant Energy Center on Oct. 23 for a three-game weekend set against the Chicago Steel & Bloomington Thunder. Tickets for each game are available by calling (608) 257-CAPS or visiting www.MadCapsHockey.com.
