
Stars Fall in Overtime to Clippers

ONTARIO, Calif. - The Salt Lake City Stars, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, fell 114-113 in overtime tonight on the road to the Agua Caliente Clippers. It marks the first time in the Salt Lake City Era (since 2016-17) that the club has played in back-to-back overtime contests and the first time in Stars/Idaho Stampede franchise history since the 2015-16 season, per the Elias Sports Bureau.
The Stars (14-14) were led by Isaiah Cousins, who recorded his fifth 20-point game of the season with a season-high 27 points to go with a team-high five assists. Stephaun Branch grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds and scored five points, and Jairus Lyles logged his third 20-point game of the 2018-19 campaign with 21 points off the bench. Tanner McGrew finished with a season-high 18 points and seven rebounds, connecting on a season-high-tying three three-pointers, and New Orleans Pelicans two-way player Trevon Bluiett logged 16 points in his seventh game with the Stars.
The Clippers (15-13) were led by Anfernee Simons, currently on assignment from the Portland Trail Blazers, who finished with a team-high 25 points on 10-of-17 (.588) from the floor in 30 minutes. LA Clippers two-way player Angel Delgado, who entered tonight's game leading the NBA G League in rebounds per game (14.7), recorded his 19th double-double of the season with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2013 NBA Draft, scored 15 points off the bench.
The game was tied at 28-all after the first quarter, but the Clippers pulled ahead courtesy of a 9-0 run in the second frame and led by as many as 16 points (57-41) with 3:05 remaining in the first half. The Clippers led by seven points (85-78) with 2:04 remaining in the third period, but the Stars erased the deficit with a 7-0 run and ended the third frame trailing by two points (87-85). Salt Lake City held a one-point advantage (96-95) halfway through the fourth quarter and the teams traded the lead eight times in the period, with Lyles hitting a driving layup with 3.2 seconds remaining to tie the game at 108-apiece and force overtime. The Stars were ahead by one point (113-112) with 29.9 seconds remaining in the two-minute overtime period, but Bennett connected on a 15-foot jumper with 0.2 seconds left to seal the victory.
Salt Lake City will open its two-game homestand with a contest tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 25, against the Long Island Nets (Brooklyn Nets affiliate) at 7 p.m. (MT) at Bruin Arena. The game, which wraps up a road/home back-to-back set, will be broadcast on Facebook Live, which is accessible via the Salt Lake City Stars Facebook page.
