Texas Stars News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Goaltender Allen York made his Texas Stars debut and stopped all 26 shots he faced to record his second career AHL shutout and lead the Stars to a 5-0 win over the Iowa Wild Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Texas got going early in the game as the power play cashed in for the first goal, getting a little friendly bounce to take the lead. Rookie Matej Stransky's centering pass from the bottom of the left face off circle redirected off the back of Iowa defenseman Jon Landry's skate and went into the net at 4:35 and a 1-0 Stars lead. Texas recorded a season-high 22 shots on goal in the first period, but Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper made several scintillating saves to keep the home team within one goal.
Starting his first ever game in a Texas uniform, Allen York only faced four shots in the first period, but had to come up big in the second period when he stoned Iowa blue liner Steven Kampfer on a rebound that would have tied the game at one. The Stars then doubled their lead with another power play goal that mirrored their first of the contest, although this one came on a five-on-three advantage. Chris Mueller's pass angled off the right foot of Wild defenseman Kyle Medvec and eluded Kuemper for a 2-0 lead at 9:23, assisted by Colton Sceviour and Maxime Fortunus. The second period goal parade continued at 14:06 when rookie Brendan Ranford raced into the right wing corner to chase down a loose puck and, in one motion, swept a backhand pass out to an unmarked Mike Hedden in the slot for a one-timer that beat Kuemper over the glove. Less than two minutes later it was 4-0 Texas as defenseman Jamie Oleksiak unleashed a blistering slap shot that blazed over Kuemper's glove and into the top right corner of the net. It was Oleksiak's first goal of the season and was assisted by Justin Dowling and Brett Ritchie.
Early in the third period the Stars iced the game on a shot from Sceviour from the middle of the left circle that beat the Iowa net minder at 7:44 for a 5-0 lead. Sceviour's team-leading ninth goal of the season was assisted by Curtis McKenzie and Aaron Rome; it was Rome's first point for Texas and his first AHL point since December 11, 2009 when he scored two goals for the Manitoba Moose at the Norfolk Admirals.
Allen York finished the game with 26 saves to record his second career AHL shutout and his 18 career AHL victory, helping Texas improve to 6-4-2-0 (14 pts.) on the season. Darcy Kuemper took the loss, stopping 44-of-49 shots, as Iowa fell to 5-3-0-0 (10 pts). The Stars out-shot the Wild 49-26 in the game and went 2-for-7 on the power play, while Iowa was 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.
