Burlington, VT - The Aberdeen IronBirds scored early and often on Sunday afternoon, as they defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 9-4.
Aberdeen took a four-run lead in the first inning. After Glynn Davis led off the ball game with a walk, Sammie Starr cracked the first home run of his career, giving Aberdeen a 2-0 lead. Mychal Givens then reached on an error when the second baseman Michael Fabiaschi booted a ground ball. Joe Velleggia doubled down the right field line, putting runners on second and third. Wynston Sawyer grounded out to short, knocking in Givens. Two batters later, Dudley Leonora hit an RBI-double making it 4-0.
The Lake Monsters got on the scoreboard in their half of the first. Sean Jamieson led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on an RBI-single from Xavier Macklin, making it 4-1.
The IronBirds got the run back in the second. Davis led off the frame with a double. He then took off for third when a pitch was delivered in the dirt. Lake Monsters catcher Diomedes Lopez threw the ball into left field, allowing Davis to trot home and score the IronBirds' fifth run.
Vermont scored their second run in the fourth. Chad Lewis and Macklin hit back-to-back singles. Jordan Tripp sacrificed them over to second and third. Chris Affinito knocked in Lewis with an RBI-single.
Aberdeen broke the game open in the sixth inning. Leonora and Martin Serrata reached on back-to-back singles. Glynn Davis moved them up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Starr singled to left, scoring Leonora and Serrata. Starr moved from first to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Givens sac fly. The next batter, Joe Velleggia, drilled a solo homer to right-center field making it 9-2.
