State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes took advantage of Williamsport Crosscutters wildness and nearly completed a comeback attempt in the late innings, but fell just short in a 3-2 defeat on Sunday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Carlos Mesa and Derek Trent both had a pair of hits that included a double, but it was the Spikes' (8-22) legs that earned them their runs on the night. State College took the first lead of the game in the second inning when Samuel Gonzalez crossed the plate on a wild pitch after Trent advanced him to third with a double.
After Williamsport (16-14) scored the tying run in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth to grab the lead, the Spikes responded by replicating their second inning in the sixth. Chris Lashmet advanced to third on a double by Carlos Mesa, and then scored on the second wild pitch of the game by Crosscutters starter Austin Wright (2-0) to draw State College within one.
The Spikes then loaded the bases in both the seventh and ninth innings, but could not score in either frame.
Ryan Hafner (0-2) pitched five strong innings to finish the game, but took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while collecting two strikeouts. Stetson Allie made the start for the Spikes and pitched three no-hit innings, walking two batters and hitting one, but striking out three without a run against him.
Wright earned the victory for Williamsport, throwing six innings and yielding two runs on five hits and a walk. The left-hander also struck out four batters. Juary Gomez (4) picked up the save after loading the bases in the ninth. Gomez escaped by retiring Wes Freeman with the last of his two strikeouts.
Monday, the Spikes and Crosscutters finish off their three-game series with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will have right-hander Jordan Cooper (0-2) on the mound. Cooper, the 23rd round pick of the Pirates in 2011 out of the University of Kentucky, makes his third appearance of the season. Williamsport will go with left-hander Adam Morgan (0-1), who has made two starts since being drafted from the University of Alabama this June.
