BURLINGTON, VT --- The Aberdeen Ironbirds scored four runs in both the top of the first and sixth innings in a 9-4 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters Sunday afternoon at historic Centennial Field.
After a leadoff walk to Glynn Davis, Sammie Starr smacked the first pitch he saw from Vermont starter J.C. Menna over the leftfield fence for a 2-0 lead. The Ironbirds added two more unearned runs in the inning on a RBI groundout and an RBI double from Dudley Leonora.
Aberdeen led 5-2 when they added four more runs in the sixth off reliever Jeiler Castillo for a 9-2 advantage. Starr got the rally started with a two-run single down the leftfield line and Joe Velleggia capped off the four-run inning with a solo home run to right center.
Xavier Macklin was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Vermont (16-11), including RBI singles in the first and seventh innings, while Sean Jamieson went 2-for-5 with two runs scored as all 10 Lake Monster hits were singles. Menna (2-20) allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits with four walk and four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Wynson Sawyer and Leonora each had three hits and an RBI for Aberdeen (8-22), which had four doubles and two homers among its 13 hits in the game. Starr and Velleggia both had two hits to go along with their first and fourth home runs of the season respectively. Mike Wright (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits over five innings for his first win.
The Ironbirds have won three of the first five contests heading into the finale of the six-game series between Vermont and Aberdeen Monday at historic Centennial Field starting at 7:05 pm. Monday is Northeast Delta Dental Night at the ballpark with an Eco-friendly Tooth Brush Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans.
