Brooklyn, NY - July 17th - The Brooklyn Cyclones (16-13) edged the Lowell Spinners (12-17) by a score of 4-1 on Sunday evening at MCU Park. Randy Fontanez allowed just one run in 3.0 innings in his first career start, but it was the bullpen that shined. Casey Hauptman, Todd Weldon, Tyson Seng, and Jeremy Gould combined to strikeout seven batters in 6.0 innings of scoreless relief. Weldon (1-0, 1.77) picked up the win after recording three strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Gould was credited with his team-leading fifth save.

Lowell broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third to go up 1-0. Although he needed just eight batters to get through the first 2.2 innings, Fontanez was tagged for a run after yielding a two-out walk and a double off the left field wall. The former South Florida Bull racked up four strikeouts in 3.0 innings before being replaced by Hauptman for the start of the fourth inning.

After the former Nebraska Cornhusker worked a scoreless top of the fourth, Ismael Tijerina looked to score the tying run in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly. However, a strong throw by the center fielder beat Tijerina to the plate and the native of Mexico was tagged out.

Brooklyn took over the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of walks, an RBI single by Brian Harrison, and a sac fly by Charles Thurber. The go-ahead RBI was Thurber's 11th of the season. The former Tennessee Volunteer routinely steps up his game in the clutch as he is hitting a whopping .500 (9-for-18) with runners in scoring position.

A two-run home run by Richard Lucas put Brooklyn on top 4-1. The Florida native now has two round trippers on the season.

Gould shut the door on the Spinners, working a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. The Cyclones are now 8-1 when the bullpen does not allow a run.

The Cyclones will be breaking out the brooms for a series sweep tomorrow, July 18, at 12:00 p.m. RHP Marco Camarena (1-2, 2.66) will take on RHP Luis Diaz (2-1, 3.24). Tomorrow is the first of two day games at MCU Park this season and will have thousands of campers in attendance for Camp Day. It is also Meet the Cyclones Monday and fans will be allowed to go on to the field and meet their favorite players following the game.
