Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Traverse City, MI - The (20-12) Traverse City Pit Spitters drop the second game against the (12-20) Kalamazoo Growlers 2-1 on Thursday, decreasing their lead in the Great Lakes East to just two games.
Starting pitching for both sides was strong early. Jacob Marcus (0-3, 2.48) and Adam Wheaton (4-2, 1.15) battled through four scoreless before Marcus hit trouble in the fifth. Two runs came across for Kalamazoo as they took an early lead. Marcus finished his day with two runs on five hits and a season-high six strikeouts.
In the seventh, Traverse City finally broke through against Wheaton. Chris Monroe singled, and Camden Traficante reached on an error. Christian Faust singled home Monroe to cut the lead to 2-1. After loading the bases with two outs, Zeb Roos hit a slow roller to short and was called out at first on the throw. What would have been a game-tying single was turned into an inning ending groundout, though on replay Roos appeared safe.
That wasn't the only call the Pit Spitters felt went against them. After reaching on a bunt hit in the sixth, Crews Taylor was called out for interference and was subsequently ejected after arguing the call. Down 2-1 in the ninth, Michael Stygles was called out on strikes to end the game, on a pitch that seemed off the plate, and argued as well. He was also ejected, making it the second play ejection of the game.
The series split with Kalamazoo means Traverse City holds just a two-game lead over Kenosha in the standings with four games left to play in the first half.
