Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Despite being out-hit 9-to-3 by the New Britain Rock Cats, the Richmond Flying Squirrels claimed a, 2-1, victory in game two of a three-game series on Wednesday night at The Diamond. The Squirrels needed just two unearned runs to win their eighth straight contest against New Britain and claim the three-game series with victories in the first two games.

The Rock Cats got started quickly against Richmond right-hander David Mixon in the first inning. Brandon Roberts led off the ballgame with a double down the right-field line to spark the inning. He moved to third on a single from Erik Lis and scored when Yangervis Solarte poked a single into left field.

New Britain right-hander no-hit the Squirrels into the fourth inning, but lost the lead in the frame. With two outs in the inning, Guerra issued back-to-back walks to Brandon Crawford and Michael Ambort. Lis then dropped the ball at first base on a ground ball from Conor Gillaspie that should have ended the inning. The error allowed Crawford to score to tie the game, 1-1. Thomas Neal followed and sent a single through the left-side of the infield to plate Ambort and put Richmond in front, 2-1. Both runs charged to Guerra were unearned.

Mixon (6-3) rebounded from his early trouble and didn't allow another run throughout the night. He lasted seven innings for the win, scattering eight hits, walking none and striking out four.

Andy Sisco handled the eighth inning and retired the lead-off batter in the New Britain ninth inning. He handed it off to closer Rafael Cova who needed just three pitches to record the final two outs and notch his 11th save of the season.

Guerra (1-2) took a hard-luck loss despite going the distance. Over eight innings he allowed just three hits and two runs - both unearned. He walked four batters and struck out three. It marked the second time on the season that a New Britain hurler had turned in a complete game only to lose to the Squirrels and Mixon.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at The Diamond. LHP Clayton Tanner (3-4, 3.44) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Tyler Robertson (0-5, 4.66) for New Britain.
