Chesapeake Baysox News Release

The Bowie Baysox split a doubleheader with the Binghamton Mets on Tuesday, making up for a rain out in Binghamton on May 18. The Baysox shut out the B-Mets in game one, with a 5-0 victory, but fell 6-3 in game two to finish the day still in second place with a 30-28 record, eight games behind league leaders Altoona.

Game one's starting pitcher, Chorye Spoone, continued to erase doubts about his ability to recover from his September 2008 shoulder surgery with his fifth consecutive quality start. He gave up four hits through 6.0 shutout innings while striking out five to make up for his five walks. The Pasadena, Md. native won his third game in a row as he pitched his first shutout start of the year, dropping his ERA to 3.88.

The Baysox opened the scoring in game one in the third inning, as third baseman Brandon Waring and left fielder Tyler Henson opened the top half with doubles that put them both in scoring position. Shortstop Carlos Rojas plated Waring with a sacrifice fly to center field that put the Baysox up 1-0 with two outs. Second baseman Ryan Adams walked before center fielder Danny Figueroa got aboard with a single to the shortstop, to load the bases for catcher Caleb Joseph, who has been hitting .309 since April.

Joseph delivered with a two-RBI single to right-center field that plated Henson and Figueroa to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead. The Tennessee-born catcher has hit eight RBIs in six games against the Mets this season.

Waring and Henson were in scoring position again in the top of the third inning, with a walk by Waring and another double by Henson, his 14th of the season. Waring made it 4-0 when he scored off outfielder Jonathan Tucker's groundout to former Baysox shortstop, Luis Hernandez. Tucker scored the fifth run in the sixth inning, driven in by Figueroa in the top of the sixth inning.

Right-handed pitcher Pedro Viola made his Baysox debut after joining the club from Triple-A Norfolk, and closed out the game with a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts.

Josh Perrault, the Baysox starter in game two, led the team with 16 saves in 2009 but made his first start in five years after spending the first two months of the season on the disabled list.

He struggled with control, allowing the opening run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning, while hitting two batters and walking another. Perrault's start did not last long, as he was pulled in favor of Eddie Gamboa after allowing runners on the corners to start the third inning. Both runners scored and Gamboa allowed a run of his own after a pair of base hits by Lucas Duda and Eric Campbell. Perrault ended with three runs allowed (two earned) off two hits through 2.0 innings.

The Baysox rallied in the fifth inning to pull within a run, as Adams, Henson and first baseman Joel Guzman each notched RBIs. Guzman's RBI pushed his team-leading total to 37 runs batted in.

Unfortunately, any momentum from the rally was killed in the bottom of the inning, as Baysox reliever Ryan Ouellette loaded the bases with one out thanks to singles by outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis and designated hitter Reese Havens and a walk to Duda. Right fielder D.J. Wabick tacked on a pair of insurance runs with a single to left field that plated Nieuwenhuis and Havens.

Bowie could manage only a single off reliever Roy Merritt in the final innings, and lost 6-3.

The Baysox will face the Mets again in game three of their four game series Wednesday at 6:35 p.m, with Japanese right-hander Ryohei Tanaka (3-5, 4.00) on the mound. After this series, they will play three more in Harrisburg before returning to Bowie on Tuesday, June 15, for a six-game home stand against the Reading Phillies and Harrisburg Senators.

Those series will include some of the Baysox best events of 2010, including the Brad Begesen bobblehead giveaway on Thursday, June 17. Bergesen was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year in 2008, after winning 15 games for the Baysox and went on to start 19 games in Baltimore in 2009, with a 3.43 ERA. The first 1,000 fans ages three-and-up at that game against Reading will receive a bobblehead in his likeness, presented by Optima services.

The Baysox will also be hosting a camp-out on the outfield for Boy Scouts on Friday, June 18, and a Fathers Day picnic with the opportunity to play catch on the outfield on Sunday, June 20. The club will also hold their Ninth Annual Tribute to the Negro Leagues on Saturday, June 19, with former Negro League players available for autographs and pre-game ceremonies honoring the players who endured the color barrier in baseball.
