Aeros Stat of the Night:
. Tuesday's 4-3 walk-off victory was the fourth ninth-inning comeback win by the Akron Aeros this season. The team also has a perfect 22-0 record when leading after eight innings.
Aerodynamics.
. Crazy Eights. Akron won for the eighth consecutive game in dramatic fashion Tuesday night at Canal Park by the final score of 4-3 against the visiting New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Right-handed starter Alex White had control issues earlier and three Akron defensive errors in the top of the third inning plagued the team as well. A sacrifice fly and an RBI single that frame gave the Cats an early 3-0 advantage. The Aeros started to make a comeback in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs thanks to an error and an RBI single by Jerad Head. Cord Phelps then started the bottom of the ninth inning with a single against dominant New Hampshire closer Danny Farquhar. Just three pitches later, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall ended the drama as he delivered a walk-off two-run homer into the right field bleachers. Reliever Chen-Chang Lee (3-3) earned the victory by stranding a pair of base runners in the top of the ninth while Farquhar (0-1) had just his second blown save in 16 opportunities this year.
. Terrific Tar Heel. Despite the rough third inning Tuesday, White was not to blame and ended up with his fourth quality start in as many Double-A outings. He permitted three runs (zero earned) and just one hit in six innings pitched alongside five walks and two strikeouts. Eastern League batters are now hitting just .136 (12-88) against the 21-year-old and he ranks second in the Cleveland Player Development System with a 2.33 ERA in 12 combined starts between Akron and Class A Kinston this season.
. Lucky Lonnie. Chisenhall has been a pleasant surprise for the Aeros since returning from the disabled list on May 28th. The Newport, North Carolina native has all three of his home runs in just 10 games played along with 11 runs scored, 12 RBI and six walks. He had not homered in 27 contests through May 12th and then returned to action on the Memorial Day weekend road trip to Binghamton. He was Cleveland's first-round (29th overall) selection in the June 2008 Draft out of Pitt Community College.
. Bodacious Bullpen. Aeros relievers have been the catalyst for a seismic change in the Akron pitching staff over the past month. The team had a 6.02 ERA on the year entering play May 8th against Reading through 28 games played while the team had an 11-17 record so far. Since then, the team ERA has dropped down to 4.60 ERA for the year thanks to some wonderful performances out of the bullpen. The Akron relief staff now has a 2.20 ERA in the past 30 games along with 102 strikeouts against just 37 walks in 106.1 innings pitched. Only five of 22 inherited runners have scored against the 'pen during this time as well.
. Movin' On Up. The second baseman Phelps earned a promotion to the Class AAA Columbus Clippers following the contest Tuesday. Phelps, a Stanford product selected in the third round of the June 2008 Draft, was batting .296 with 23 RBI in 53 games for Akron this year. No corresponding roster move has been made and the active Aeros roster currently stands at 23 men.
