Squirrels and Curve Finale Suspended in 4th Inning

ALTOONA, PA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels were leading the Altoona Curve when rains forced the suspension of the series finale in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game will be resumed and completed when the Flying Squirrels return to Altoona on Friday, August 27th.

When the game resumes, Altoona will have runners at second and third base with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, trailing Richmond 6-3.

The Curve wasted no time getting to Squirrels' right-hander Craig Westcott. Shelby Ford stroked a double to left field to start the rally with one out. Jordy Mercer followed with an RBI single to put Altoona in front, 1-0. Westcott retired Matt Hague, but walked both Kris Watts and Brandon Jones to load the bases. Miles Durham followed the free-passes and cracked a two-run single off the top of the wall in left field. His liner plated Mercer and Watts for a 3-0 lead.

Richmond came racing back in the top of the second against Altoona righty Tim Alderson. Brandon Belt led off and extended his hit-streak to nine games with a single back through the box. Conor Gillaspie followed with a single through the right-side of the infield that moved Belt to third. Clay Timpner got the Squirrels on the board with a single to right field. Eliezer Zambrano followed with a grounder to first base that Matt Hague threw away attempting to force Timpner at second. The error left the bases loaded with nobody out. Ryan Lormand dug in and tied the game, 3-3 with a two-run single up the middle.

Westcott retired the side in order in the second and the Squirrels jumped on Alderson again in the third. Belt led off with a double to the alley in right-center field and Alderson used 10 pitches before walking Gillaspie. Timpner then drilled a two-run double down the right-field line to score both runners for a 5-3 Richmond lead. Two batters later, Westcott belted a double off the wall in left-center field to plate Timpner, aiding his own cause and extending the Squirrels' advantage to 6-3.

The Squirrels will enjoy the Eastern League All-Star Break on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will open a four-game series against the Bowie Baysox at The Diamond on Thursday night at 7:05 PM.
