Alex White Wins Aeros Player of the Week

AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros named starting pitcher Alex White the team's Player of the Week today after excelling again with two more starts in the Eastern League. The award covers the week of July 5th through July 11th where the Aeros played seven games against the Trenton Thunder and the Erie SeaWolves. White started in Akron's victories Monday night and Saturday night, leading the way with another string of quality starts.

The right-hander finished the week with a 1-0 record and a 0.75 ERA in 12.0 innings pitched. He recorded eight strikeouts against only seven hits and two walks, continuing his consistent streak of Double-A pitching. In his outing Monday at Canal Park against the Thunder, White tied a career-high with 12 groundball outs but did not factor into the decision as the Aeros struck for seven runs in the deciding seventh inning. He then held the SeaWolves scoreless through six innings Saturday night, earning the easy victory.

Over the course of his 10 starts for Akron this year, the 21-year-old has easily emerged as the leader of the starting rotation. He is now 4-1 with a 1.53 ERA in 59.0 innings pitched, holding Eastern league opponents to a .190 batting average against with a team-leading eight quality starts. He has permitted 22 runs total while only allowing 10 earned runs and has an even more impressive 0.74 ERA over his past four appearances.

White began the 2010 season with the Class A Kinston Indians in the Carolina League, his first taste of professional baseball. In his eight starts with the K-Tribe, he finished 2-3 with a 2.86 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched. He recorded quality starts in each of his final four starts before earning the promotion to Akron on May 23rd. Cleveland selected White in the first round (15th overall) of the June 2009 Draft after a very successful three seasons at the University of North Carolina.

Baseball America recognized the Greenville, NC native in their pre-season and mid-season rakings of baseball's best prospects. He was named the ninth best in the Indians system before the year as well as the #65 prospect in all of the minor leagues. In a recent update, White jumped all the way up to #47 according to the esteemed publication.

The Akron Aeros will award their Player of the Week honor to an individual player every Monday for the rest of the season. In the case of a Monday closure of the team offices, the Aeros will announce the award Tuesday morning. Akron outfielder/first baseman Matt McBride won the award last week as well as the Eastern League Player of the Week. This week, the separate EL Player-Pitcher of the Week Awards went to Binghamton's Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Reading's Vince Worley, respectively.

The first half of the Eastern League regular season concludes this evening as Akron finishes a four-game road trip in Erie. The Aeros hope to keep pace in the Western Division playoff race Monday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Jerry Uht Park. Akron left-hander Eric Berger (4-4, 4.74 ERA) will make the start in the series finale against SeaWolves starter Thad Weber (5-9, 4.05 ERA).
