Mastroianni Single Gives Fisher Cats Win

Binghamton, NY-Darin Mastroianni singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and Vince Bongiovanni earned his first save in the Blue Jays organization as the Fisher Cats completed a successful road trip with a 6-5 win over Binghamton Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.

With the game tied at 5-5 in the top of the ninth inning, Brian Jeroloman singled off reliever Roy Merritt and moved to second on a single by Callix Crabbe. Pinch-runner Jonathan Diaz took over Jeroloman and scored on Mastroianni's base hit to put the Fisher Cats up 6-5.

New Hampshire completed the eight-game road trip to Portland and Binghamton with a 6-2 record and with the win, the Fisher Cats maintain a 1-1/2 game lead over Trenton in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League. The Fisher Cats are also a season-best 19 games over .500 with a 55-36 record.

The Fisher Cats opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with three consecutive two-out hits. David Cooper (2-for-4) doubled and scored on a double by Adeiny Hechavarria (2-for-4, 2 RBI). Jeroloman (2-for-3, RBI) then singled in Hechavarria to make it 2-0.

Binghamton (48-43) sent eight men to the plate in the bottom of the third inning against Fisher Cats starter Randy Boone. Kirk Nieuwenheis doubled and Marshall Hubbard and Josh Satin drew walks to load the bases. Mike Nickeas drove in two runs with a double and another run scored on a wild pitch to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, with two outs, Cooper again doubled, this time off the center field wall. And Hechavarria picked up his second RBI with a single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.

New Hampshire took the lead with the two homers in the top of the sixth inning, Shawn Bowman and Eric Thames hit back-to-back solo home runs to end the outing for Mets starter Chris Schwinden who allowed five runs on eight hits in five-plus innings.

Randy Boone worked the first five innings for the Fisher Cats. He allowed three runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out three.

Michael Fisher led off the Binghamton sixth with a home run off Clint Everts to make it 5-4. After the Mets loaded the bases, Adrian Martin came on and got Raul Reyes to hit into a doubleplay to keep New Hampshire in front.

Martin remained perfect until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Sean Ratliff drilled a two-out solo homer to tie the game at 5-5. Martin (5-1) earned the win when the Fisher Cats scored in the ninth inning. Vince Bongiovanni worked around a single and an error to complete a scoreless inning to close the game and earn his first save for the Fisher Cats, and first since 2008.
