Trenton Thunder News Release
Bowie, MD- The Thunder scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie and came away with a 10-5 victory over the Bowie BaySox on Monday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium. With the win, Trenton improves to 53-37 on the season.
The Thunder wasted no time, as they tagged LHP Pedro Viola for three runs in the top of the first inning. The first three batters all recorded hits off Viola, capped off by a two-run double from Daniel Brewer. Marcos Vechionacci drove in Brewer with a single to left field to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead after half an inning of play.
Bowie responded with one run in the bottom of the first off RHP Lance Pendleton, as shortstop Greg Miclat singled to left field and then reached second on an error by Jack Rye. Miclat came around to score on a ground ball hit by Caleb Joseph. In the bottom of the fourth, Joseph connected on a two-run homer off Pendleton to tie it up at three. Pendleton finished the day after six innings of work and allowed three runs (one unearned) on four hits and struck out seven.
The game would stay locked in a 3-3 tie until the top of the ninth inning, when Bob McCrory (1-2) loaded the bases with Justin Snyder coming up to bat. McCrory was lifted for Pedro Beato, and the right-hander proceeded to walk in the go-ahead run for the Thunder, and put Trenton ahead 4-3. With the bases still loaded, Edwar Gonzalez cleared the bags with a three-run triple to give the Thunder a 7-3 edge. After an RBI single from Matt Cusick, Vechionacci knocked in two more runs with a double, giving the Thunder a 10-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
After giving up two runs in the bottom of the ninth, J.B. Cox settled down and was able to get Steve Lerud to fly out to end the game. Cory Arbiso (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to record his second win of the season. Both Vechionacci and Gonzalez finished with three hits on the day.
Trenton will have the next two days off for the EL All-Star break. They resume action on Thursday night, as they host the Reading Phillies at Waterfront Park starting at 7:05 PM. For tickets, call 609-394-330, or online at trentonthunder.com.
