. Sunday Sadness. The Erie SeaWolves snapped Akron's four-game winning streak Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park, striking for four runs in the eighth inning in their 5-1 victory. Aeros lefty Scott Barnes and SeaWolves starter Charles Furbush engaged in a dominant pitcher's duel for the first seven innings of the contest. Erie scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and Akron first baseman Beau Mills recorded the team's first hit on a single in the fifth. The visitors rallied in the next inning as third baseman Cristo Arnal scored Tim Fedroff with a sacrifice fly to center field. Reliever Connor Graham entered the game in relief in the eighth but a crucial Mills error led to four unearned runs and the deciding margin of the contest. Erie reliever Zach Simons (2-3) earned the win while Graham (2-5) took the loss by allowing three hits, two walks and only recording two outs.
. Red-Hot Storm. Barnes recorded his third straight quality start Sunday, limiting the Wolves to just a single run on four hits over seven efficient innings. The Akron left-hander struck out four batters as well but did not factor into the decision as he left the game with the score tied at 1-1 through seven. A former St. John's Red Storm athlete, he leads the Aeros this year with 17 starts, 81 strikeouts and 85.0 innings pitched. He is now 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 20.2 innings over his three starts in the month of July, striking out 12 batters against only 14 hits and four walks. The 22-year-old still leads Eastern League starting pitchers with 8.58 strikeouts per nine innings pitched this season and the Indians acquired him from the San Francisco Giants in a trade last July.
. Newsweek. The Aeros announced today that right-handed starting pitcher Alex White is the recipient of the most-recent Akron Aeros Player of the Week award. He was 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in 12.0 innings pitched over two starts last week, including six scoreless innings against Erie on Saturday. The 21-year-old is the first Akron pitcher to win the award in four weeks this season.
. Futurama. Akron third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall participated in Sunday night's MLB XM All-Star Futures Game in Anaheim, CA. The 21-year-old entered the game in the top of the sixth inning as a defensive replacement and finished the contest 0-for-1 with a walk and an RBI groundout. Chisenhall was Cleveland's first-round (29th overall) selection in the June 2008 Draft out of Pitt Junior College in Winterville, NC and he was the 14th Aero selected to the event over the its 12-year history.
. A Tale of Two Halves. Tonight's contest marks the final game of a back-and-forth first half of the regular season for the Aeros. After losing to the first-place Altoona Curve at Canal Park on May 26th, the team held an 18-28 (.391 pct) record. Since that point in time however, Akron leads the Eastern League with a 27-16 (.628 pct) record, two games ahead of both Altoona and the Binghamton Mets. Akron's pitching staff has a 3.17 ERA over these 43 games and the team is out-scoring opponents 207 to 177.
