FAIRBORN, Ohio - Cincinnati Cyclones forward Dustin Sproat established a club record by scoring goals ten seconds apart in the second period Wednesday night in a 6-0 win at Dayton. The victory eliminated the Bombers from the Kelly Cup playoffs.
The Cyclones opened a 2-0 lead in the opening period. Mark Van Guilder collected his 23rd goal of the season just 5:16 into the first period, banging home a shot from the slot. T.J. McElroy and Mac Faulkner handed out the assists. Faulkner picked up his 19th of the year at 9:11 on the power play. His shot slipped inside the near side post as Faulkner ripped it from the bottom of the left circle. Van Guilder and McElroy collected the assists. Cincinnati outshot Dayton, 10-8, in the period.
The Cyclones exploded for three second period goals, the 21st time this season that a trio of scores have occurred in a frame. Matt Syroczynski collected his 20th goal at 1:18 from Jason Woll and Van Guilder. Then, Dustin Sproat set a club record by scoring goals ten seconds apart. Sproat's first goal came on a give-and-go with Gerard Miller at 7:25. Off the ensuing faceoff from center ice, Sproat tipped in another score from Miller at 7:35. The shots on goal were even at eleven apiece in the frame.
The final goal of the night came from Faulkner in a four-on-four situation from the bottom of the right circle. Frederic St. Denis and Matt Pierce, in his first pro game, got the assists. Cincinnati ousthot Dayton, 12-5, in the period and controlled the shots, 33-24, for the game.
Ryan Nie stopped all 24 shots to collect his 20th win of the season and second shutout of the campaign. It was Nie's twelfth pro shutout and fifth in the ECHL. Paul Drew took the loss, stopping twelve shots before departing in the second period.
Sproat's goals ten seconds apart eclipsed the club record of 27 seconds previously held by Sam Ftorek from the 2006-07 season.
With the win and Elmira's loss to Reading, the Cyclones take sole possession of first place in the North Division with 79 points. Elmira is second in the division with 77 points. Johnstown, Wheeling and Trenton are tied for second with 76 points. The top four teams in the North Division advance to the Kelly Cup playoffs. This is the closest divisional race in the 21-year history of the ECHL.
The Cyclones are now 37-25-5 on the season, while Dayton is 30-31-6. The club returns to U.S. Bank Arena tomorrow (March 26) for a visit from Trenton at 7:30pm.
