Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - Only three games back of first in the Texas League North, the Springfield Cardinals were hoping to continue their recent pitching dominance by sending Arquimedes Nieto to the mound in their first game of their three game series with the Arkansas Travelers.
In his first three innings of work, Nieto did not allow the Travelers a run or a hit but the Travelers' offense would not remain silent for long. After walking the lead off batter in the top of the 4th inning, Nieto would then allow Alexi Amarista to hit a two-run home run giving the Travelers the lead, 2-0.
Travelers' starter Michael Anton would also not allow a run after three innings of work, but Pete Kozma soon ended his shutout in the bottom of the 4th inning with a two RBI double with the bases loaded that tied the game at 2-2. Chris Swauger continued the offensive onslaught against Anton when he hit an RBI single giving the Cardinals their first lead of the day at 3-2. The Cardinals offense extended their lead again as Tony Cruz added a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to increase the Cardinals lead, 5-2. Steven Hill then added the exclamation point on the 4th inning when he hit his 18th home run of the year, a three run shot, that brought the Springfield lead to 8-2. After the homer, Michael Anton left the game in the bottom of the 4th inning and gave way to Travelers reliever Jeremy Haynes who got out of the inning without allowing another run. Anton ended the day with five strikeouts, but also allowed eight hits and eight earned runs.
Travelers' second baseman Alexi Amarista added his third RBI of the game in the top of the 6th inning when he hit a sacrifice fly that scored Tyson Auer and narrowed the Cardinals lead, 8-3. Arquimedes Nieto would be done with his outing after the 6th pitching the 10th straight quality start for a Springfield starting pitcher allowing three runs on just two hits with four strikeouts..
Reliever Anthony Ortega entered the game in the bottom of the 6th inning on a major league rehab assignment, but appeared to get rattled after throwing a wild pitch to score Jose Garcia from 3rd base and increase the Cardinals lead, 9-3. Steven Hill then got into the action against Ortega by adding his second home run of the game, a solo shot, elevating the Cardinals lead to 10-3. After Ortega walked the bases loaded, reliever Robert Fish entered the game and issued a walk to Pete Kozma allowing Andrew Brown to score. Chris Swauger then drew another walk off of Fish that scored Matt Carpenter and extended the Cardinals lead to 12-3.
After a scoreless 7th inning from Blake King, the Travelers added a run off of Jason Buursma in the top of the 8th inning when Efren Navarro scored from third on an Abel Nieves ground out to narrow the lead to 12-4.
Usually the Travelers first baseman, Efren Navarro took the mound in the bottom of the 8th inning and ran into trouble as Pete Kozma hit an RBI single and Antone Dejesus then added a sacrifice fly that scored Aaron Luna to give the Cardinals a commanding 14-4 lead.
Adam Reifer appeared in the top of the 9th inning to close out the game for the Cardinals, but before he could end the game, he allowed an RBI triple to Jeremy Moore that brought the lead to 14-5. Reifer would eventually get the third out on a fly ball to center field to close out the game at 14-5.
The Cardinals offense thumped the Travelers pitching staff with 14 runs on 15 hits and forcing the Travelers to use six different pitchers in the game.
Springfield will continue their three game series with the Arkansas Travelers Wednesday night at 7:10pm. The Cardinals will send right hander Trey Hearne (2-1) to the mound against right hander Ryan Brasier (5-9) for the Travelers.
