Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Hooks rallied not once, but twice Wednesday night.
J.D. Martinez helped combat San Antonio's five spot in the fifth inning with a two-run double in the seventh as Corpus Christi surged to trump the Missions 8-6 before 5,196 at Whataburger Field.
Having won eight of their last 10 games, the Hooks improved to 15-24 in the second half and 51-58 overall.
Down 6-5 in the seventh, Freddy Parejo ignited the Corpus Christi rally with an infield single to short. Parejo then stole second and advanced to third on a bunt base hit by Albert Cartwright. Facing Koby Clemens, Missions reliever Matt Buschmann (1-2) attempted to pick off Cartwright but threw wildly to first base, allowing Parejo to tie the game at six. Clemens eventually walked, setting the stage for Martinez' two-run double to right field for an 8-6 Hooks' lead.
Reliever Jared Wells (5-4) struck out four and held San Antonio (17-22, 52-57) scoreless over the final three innings to earn the victory.
Hooks starter Jeremy Johnson labored through a 38-pitch first inning, including a lead-off home run by Blake Tekotte. Johnson settled in and faced the minimum through the next three frames before running into trouble in the fifth.
Luis Martinez walked while Mitch Canham and pinch-hitter Anthony Contreras reached on singles to load the bases. Tekotte then belted a two-run, ground-rule double that bounced over the right-field fence and onto the berm, turning Corpus Christi's 5-1 lead into a two-run advantage. Zawadzki erased the bulge all together with a three-run pool shot to right field.
Johnson exited after 4 2/3 innings, yielding six runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out one, throwing 60 of 84 pitches for strikes.
Corpus Christi punched through for four runs in the second. With two out and runners at second and third, San Antonio starter Erik Davis issued an intentional walk to eighth-place hitter Lou Santangelo. Johnson followed and placed a single down the right-field line, plating Jon Gaston and Kody Kirkland. Santangelo was able to score from first base on Sawyer Carroll's error in right field. Parejo, 12 for his last 23, extended his hitting streak to five games with an RBI double to left field for a 4-1 Hooks advantage.
In the following frame, Clemens worked a lead-off walk and promptly stole second base. Martinez then laced a single to right, staking Corpus Christi to a 5-1 lead.
Thursday night features a meeting between two of the Texas League's top 10 pitchers. The Missions' Jeremy Hefner (9-5, 2.82 ERA) takes on Jordan Lyles (7-8, 3.10 ERA) in a 7:05 tilt.
San Diego set-up man Mike Adams is expected to make a rehab appearance for San Antonio Thursday night. The former Sinton Pirate and Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelina, 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA in 42 relief outings this year for the Padres, will be making his first appearance at Whataburger Field.
In addition to Adams, former Hook and current Astro Tommy Manzella is set to make a rehab appearance. The rookie shortstop has been on the disabled list for six weeks with a fractured left index finger. According to Houston's team website, Manzella will get two at-bats for the Hooks and travel with the club to Midland.
