Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Dallas Keuchel pitched six strong innings and Michael Affronti drove in five runs as Corpus Christi defeated San Antonio 11-5 Tuesday night at Whataburger Field before 5,275.

The Hooks have won seven of nine while improving to 14-24 in the second half of Texas League play. The Missions are 17-21.

Keuchel (1-1) toiled for six innings, scattered three hits, walked one and fanned three in his first Double-A victory. Jailen Peguero then went six-up, six-down with two strikeouts.

Corpus Christi drew first blood in the third from former Hooks pitcher Tyler Lumsden. Freddy Parejo reached on an infield single and scooted to second on a throwing error by third baseman James Darnell. Parejo wound up 90 feet from the pay station after Albert Cartwright's sacrifice bunt and ran home when Koby Clemens lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

The Hooks used a combination of big and small ball to add a run the next inning. Jon Gaston opened with a double to right-center and was sacrificed to third by Kody Kirkland. Gaston sprinted home for a 2-0 Corpus Christi advantage as the result of a Luis Martinez passed ball.

Affronti's three-run double made it 5-0 Hooks after five. The knock-out trouble for Lumsden began when he allowed consecutive two-out singles to J.D. Martinez, Gaston and Kirkland. Affronti then drilled an 0-2 pitch down the left-field line.

That sent Lumsden (4-10) to the showers with a line of nine hits, three earned runs, three walks and a strikeout.

The Missions answered with two scores. Andrew Parrino walked and scored from first on pinch-hitter Christian Colonel's double. One out later, Colonel made it 5-2, scoring when Lance Zawadzki bounced out.

But three defensive miscues, a walk, Kirkland's double, Affronti's RBI single and another Clemens sacrifice fly fueled a three-run seventh for the Hooks as San Antonio's defense fell apart behind reliever Daniel Ottone.

It got even uglier in the home eighth with Aaron Breit on the hill. He struck lead-off man Parejo with a pitch and then walked four of the next five batters. Affronti's fifth RBI of the night accounted for run No. 11.

Affronti finished with four hits. Parejo had two singles and has hits in 15 of his last 17 games.

Jeremy Johnson (4-9) takes the mound for Corpus Christi Wednesday at 7:05. The Missions counter with Erik Davis (0-0).
