Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGDALE, AR - The Kansas City Royals announced a transaction Wednesday afternoon affecting the Naturals roster. The related details are as follows:
Left-hander Mike Montgomery has been activated from the disabled list. He has been sidelined with a forearm strain since June 18th. Montgomery is coming off three appearances for the Surprise Royals, the Royals' rookie-level affiliate in the Arizona League. In a total of 8 2/3 innings, Montgomery gave up just one run, and struck out seven.
The 20-year old lefty from Mesa, AZ had already spent time on the disabled list with the same injury, which was aggravated in a start on June 15th. The top overall prospect in the Kansas City Royals' organization according to Baseball America, Montgomery has a 3-1 record and a 2.79 ERA in five starts since joining the Naturals in late April. He is expected to start for the Naturals Wednesday night.
In a corresponding move, right-hander Mario Santiago has been placed on the disabled list with a calf strain. Santiago started Tuesday night for the Naturals, going 3 1/3 innings and giving up six runs. It was his first appearance for the Naturals in nearly a month after leaving to participate in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, where he represented his native Puerto Rico.
Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 16th round of the 2005 draft, Santiago is 6-6 overall this season with a 3.56 ERA. He's allowed 97 hits in 93 2/3 innings while fanning 60 and issuing 25 walks in 18 games (17 starts).
After the moves, the Naturals' roster remains at the Texas League limit of 24 active players.
