Saginaw Spirit News Release
Flint, MI - The Saginaw Spirit (5-3-1-0, 11 points) return to the ice Friday evening, marking the first of a three-game in three-night set, opening on the road against their bitter West Division rival, Flint Firebirds (6-3-0-0). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at The Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan.
The Spirit went 1-2 last week, their most recent contest a 3-2 defeat to the Sarnia Sting on Nov. 6 at The Dow Event Center. San Jose Sharks goaltending prospect Ben Gaudreau stole the show, stopping 36 of 38 Saginaw shots. The Spirit outshot the Sting in the final two periods, 27-7, but could only solve Gaudreau once in that time period.
Buffalo Sabres prospect Josh Bloom scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, and extended his point streak to a season-long, seven games in the process. The Oakville, Ontario native leads the Spirit with 12 points this season.
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native Calem Mangone extended his point streak to a season-long four games with a goal on Saturday. The second overall pick in the 2021 Under-18 Priority Selection has eight points in nine games this season, and is tied with Josh Bloom and Czech Import Matyas Sapovaliv with a plus/minus rating of plus-4.
The Spirit are off to another great start against their in-state rival, Flint Firebirds. The two teams will meet for the third time this season, with the Spirit off to an early 2-0 lead in the Coors Light I-75 Divide Rivalry Series.
Saginaw has dominated their southern foes over the last three seasons, posting a 21-3-1-0 record in their last 25 regular season meetings. The Spirit have won nine straight matchups at The Dort Financial Center and have earned at least one point in 13 straight games (11-0-2-0) dating back to the 2016-17 season.
Grand Blanc native Dalton Durhart has torched his hometown team this season, scoring five of his seven points this season against the Firebirds. In total, 11 Spirit players have scored at least one point in the two games played against Flint this season.
