State College Spikes News Release
NILES, Ohio - Home runs by Brady Whalen and Stanley Espinal led the State College Spikes' offensive charge, and Franyel Casadilla delivered astrong outing on the mound as the Spikes notched their 10th consecutive road win by defeating the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 9-3 on Friday night at Eastwood Field.
The win extended State College's (27-31) franchise-record road winning streak, and was their fourth in a row against the Scrappers (32-26), who entered the night leading the New York-Penn League Wild Card race.
Whalen's two-run homer to right field, his fifth of the year, punctuated a five-run fifth inning for the Spikes. Lars Nootbaar started the surge by doubling in a run to tie the game at 1-1, and Nick Dunn's two-run single one batter later gave State College its first lead of the game.
Kevin Woodall, Jr.'s run-scoring double and an RBI single for Delvin Perez tacked on two more Spikes runs in the eighth.
After Tyler Freeman doubled in a run and Mitch Reeves singled in another to draw Mahoning Valley within 7-3 in the eighth, Espinal closed out the scoring with his fifth homer of the year for the Spikes in the ninth. The two-run shot down the left-field line was also Espinal's third hit of the game.
Casadilla (3-1) gave up a run in the first when Jose Fermin led off with a triple and Freeman knocked him in with a single, but yielded no more scoring. The right-hander allowed a total of three hits and a walk while striking out three batters over seven innings.
Scrappers starter Juan Mota (3-5) took the loss after giving up five runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batsmen over five inning. Mota, who did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, struck out five batters in the effort.
Saturday, the Spikes and Scrappers meet for the second game of their three-game series at Eastwood Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
