Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - Friday night's New York-Penn League game between the Staten Island Yankees and Vermont Lake Monsters was suspended by rain in the middle of the fifth inning at historic Centennial Field with the Yankees leading 7-1 after having posted a six-run top of the fourth.
The suspended nine-inning game will resume at 5:05 pm on Saturday with the start of the bottom of the fifth inning. It will be followed by the night's regularly-scheduled game, now a seven-inning contest.
Vermont took a quick 1-0 lead Friday as Joseph Pena led off the bottom of the first with a single, advanced to third on a pair of groundouts and scored the game's first run on a Jeremy Eierman two-out RBI infield single into the hole between short and third.
The Lake Monsters loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third, but Yankee shortstop Eduardo Torrealba started an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play with a great diving stop of a grounder to his right by J.J. Schwarz. Staten Island quickly tied the game in the fourth on a leadoff homer from Kyle Gray.
The Yankees added five more runs in the inning after Clark Cota came on in relief of starter Chase Cohen with two runners on and two out. A Miguel Flames two-out, two-run double to rightcenter and Alex Junior RBI double to leftcenter gave Staten Island a 4-1. Cohen was charged with three runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.
Staten Island added two more runs in the fourth on a Vermont error and a wild pitch, then took a 7-1 lead in the fifth when Canaan Smith led off with a double and later scored on a Junior sac fly. Yankees starter Rodney Hutchison allowed one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings. He was headed back out to the mound for the fifth when the game went into a delay and then suspended.
The first 1,00 fans through the gates on Saturday will receive a free Lake Monsters jersey and the final post-game fireworks show of the season will take place after the second game. Only Saturday tickets will gain fans admission into both games. Fans with tickets for Friday's suspended game can exchange those tickets for any upcoming Lake Monsters regular-season home game (including Saturday's game, although tickets are limited).
