West Virginia Black Bears News Release
Granville, W. Va. - Returning home to Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears defeated the Williamsport Crosscutters 4-1.
The Black Bears' victory comes after a two-game road series against the Batavia Muckdogs, where the teams split a pair of contests coming out of the All-Star Break.
The first five innings of Friday night's game were a pitcher's duel between West Virginia starter P Osvaldo Bido and a trio of Williamsport hurlers. The teams combined for five hits through the first five innings, keeping offense at a minimum in the early going.
Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Black Bears broke the game open. After a pair of fielding errors and a walk loaded the bases, C Grant Koch brought home the first run of the game on an RBI single to put the score at 1-0.
DH Jhoan Herrera followed up with an opposite field single to drive two more runners across, and 3B Ben Bengston cracked a hit into the outfield to bring the West Virginia lead to four runs after six innings.
While the offense found its stride, Bido continued to cruise in his longest outing of the season. The righty exited the game after seven scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and striking out seven batters without surrendering a walk.
The Crosscutters finally got on the board in the top of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, an RBI groundout gave the visitors their only run, as Black Bears reliever P Conner Loeprich worked out of the jam to maintain a three-run advantage.
Loeprich stayed in the game in the ninth inning to pick up the save, securing a Black Bears' win to start a six-game homestand.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow night for another matchup at Monongalia County Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
