State College Spikes News Release
GRANVILLE, W.V. - Lars Nootbaar and Edwin Figuera collected three hits apiece to lead the State College Spikes' 16-hit outburst as the Spikes defeated the West Virginia Black Bears, 12-3, on Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Spikes (13-19) set season highs in runs and hits en route to their third consecutive series victory on the road this season.
Figuera recorded his third three-hit game of the season and stole two bases, while Nootbaar achieved a new personal best with his trio of hits.
Nick Dunn drove in three runs and stole a base for State College. Delvin Perez went 1-for-2 with a triple, a stolen base, two RBI and three walks to finish the game just one shy of a Spikes single-game record.
Alexis Wilson contributed a double and two RBI for the Spikes as well.
The State College mound corps also produced a sterling effort, with starter Chris Holba striking out a career-best eight batters over four innings of work. Winston Nicacio (1-2) then struck out two batters and gave up one hit and a walk in a scoreless fifth inning to earn credit for the win.
Michael Baird (1) finished the night strong for the Spikes with three strikeouts over four shutout frames. Baird gave up just one hit and one hit batsman, and was awarded the automatic save.
The Spikes produced a three-run inning on three different occasions during the night.
West Virginia (11-21) starter Zach Spears (0-2) took the loss after yielding four runs on seven hits and a walk over three innings. Spears struck out three batters in the effort.
The Black Bears, who once again played as the West Virginia Moonshiners for the game, have now dropped seven straight games.
Thursday, the Spikes seek the sweep as they finish their three-game series with the Black Bears at Monongalia County Ballpark. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature left-hander Jacob Schlesener (0-2) on the mound for State College in his second start. West Virginia is set to send right-hander Alex Manasas (1-4) to the hill.
